Sunday I did the usual visiting. I also went down a rabbit hole thinking about how I select Read-along series and looking at options for upcoming years. I posted a few polls on COYER facebook page to get input. I’ve mostly just done UF but wanted to see if other genres would be of interest. My daylilies started blooming today! I’m happy my daughter has taken a real interest in the lettuce. She’s also doing more to put food waste into the compost. It’s back to the heat wave this week. So we walked Lulu after dinner which was pleasant but very dark. My daughter used her phone flashlight so I could make sure I got all the poop.
Monday, well I wanted to stay home and do stuff but I needed to run a few errands. I made another call about the Amazon return, and to the pharmacy about my daughter’s RX. I went to Home Depot to get marigolds and impatiens, then to pick up a set of wireless earbuds someone was giving away on the Buy Nothing group, to Aldi for a few grocery items, and then Harris Teeter for my daughter’s RX.
Tuesday, the morning was gorgeous and refreshing after last night’s rain. I went early for a walk with Lulu by the swans. I had a guy coming to detail my car which had been rescheduled multiple times. He made it today and he did a great job, inside and out. It’s the best it has looked since I bought it. I planted the marigolds around the tomatoes. I made a batch of food for Lulu.
Wednesday, I did some of my usual computer stuff. Then I did a bunch of cleanup / pickup in the family room / kitchen, including dustbusting some Lulu hair which had gathered in a few spots. Lulu had her annual vet appt in the early afternoon. Since she has been on homemade food, her skin seems better and she isn’t as itchy, so she doesn’t seem to need an allergy shot yet or maybe not at all this year. We were worried about her teeth but the vet says they are in great shape. Her weight is good too, she’s down about a half pound at 18.8 pounds, and could lose 1-2 more pounds. The vet did hear a heart murmur so we have to watch that. Otherwise, she is doing great. I managed to put together a menu plan. I do 5 days at a time based on that’s about how far weather predictions are close. I’ve been looking for a 3rd bar stool since our island is bigger after the reno. They don’t have them where I bought them originally. I found a Facebook marketplace offer for 2 for a good price so I went and picked them up. They are not quite the same color but very close. Then we took Lulu for a short walk by the pool which was hopping with activity.
Thursday, I didn’t sleep great so I didn’t get up too early. I figured out how to get our tickets for tonight. Then I made sure of the time schedule to get there on time. I got busy on all the tasks I could get done but will have to do most tomorrow. We went to see Hamilton! We wore masks. We got home just in time for winds, pouring rain and then hail. I shut down the computers and printer. Then the power went out. I was keyed up from the show and power outage. We did have camping lanterns which worked great; our phones worked and we always have fully charged little power banks. I did not get to sleep until around 3, after finishing my book and then Lulu was barking her head off at 6am!
Friday, so I let Lulu out and she did nothing. I put her back in the crate and slept until 9. No power. I am very tired and my head sort of hurts because of it. I listened to an audiobook. I read up on how long food keeps in a fridge or freezer. I ate things which didn’t require opening the fridge or freezer. My daughter used the gas stove about the time I went to bed to make macaroni & cheese with broccoli. She had to light it with the torch I use for the grill. I walked all around the house and saw no damage except for some branches down. I was glad when the power came on since it will get to 97F / 36C today. It had gotten to about 80 in the house. The freezer was at 20 and things were frozen, including some ice cream bars in the door. The fridge freezer also had things frozen solid. The fridge was 45. FDC says to pitch if it has been over 40 for 4 hours. However, if it was 45 after 12 hours it wasn’t 45 the whole time. My fridge tends to act like a freezer and sit in the 30s. It easily could have been over 40 for 6 hours but that is air temp. Food temp is different and it is the food temperature they mean. The air temp is warmer than the food temp. I’ll still check things out.
Saturday, I fell asleep really early and slept 10 hours. Yesterday was so exhausting. When I took Lulu out a new variety of daylily has just started blooming. I watched the Ashland Library web Zoom of Ilona Andrews and Jeaniene Frost which was hilarious.
I always love this challenge and enjoy planning and picking out what I’m going to read. I’m on a real mood for police procedurals so I have picked the Kings Lake Investigation series by Peter Grainger. I own the first three on audio and have the 4th one as an audio ARC.
Stacking the Shelves is hosted by Reading Reality. These are the exciting ARCs I received this week (If you click on the cover, it will take you to the Goodreads entry):
NONE.
(If you click on the cover, it will take you to the Goodreads entry)
Audible sent me a $10 coupon (idk why) and I was able to buy these 2 audiobooks from my wishlist.
I got this 99¢ anthology which has some proceeds to a dog charity.
Now the really scary one. This is all the Kindle and Audible freebies I grabbed this past week. You can see why I need to do Thrifty Thursday to be sure I read a few at least one each month.
I really meant to cut back on freebies BUT they are free so I guess that won’t be happening.
I’m not including things like reviews posted or upcoming as they are always in the right sidebar. And, my challenge status is also there.
Anne
You had a crazy week. Glad the power is back.
Thank you. No power is bad news.
I hate it when the power goes out.
Love those pictures! Especially that first one with Lulu.
Hope your weekend is nice and relaxing.
Thank you Greg. Lulu does enjoy her toys and knows they are hers. She only chews on her own toys.
Seems like you had a pretty busy week! I’m glad the power is working again, I’ve never experienced something like that… It seems a bit scary.
Thank you. I’ve had power outages before but with slightly different situations. Once ours was out because trees falling but not our neighbors and we ran an extension cord to power the fridge, water pump for the well and tv. But we used candles for light. I remember taking showers in the morning by candlelight before heading out to work. Another time was right before I moved so I didn’t have much in the way of foodstuffs.
It’s taking a while for my flowers to bloom. It’s also been raining a lot so I hope they will soon bloom in profusion! Have a great week.
Thank you! It seems early for blooming flowers. Daylilies bloom in late June and July in Minnesota. We haven’t had quite enough rain until this week.
I loved reading about your week. And I am glad the power is back and you got enough sleep. Love the pictures as well.
I hope you have a great week ahead.
Thank you! I am certainly glad to have the power back. I just didn’t want it to be so long all the freezer stuff would go bad. It really seems to have shaken Lulu and she is barking a lot. And before this I would say she maybe barked once a year.
I love how our mind begins to wonder, and could totally see myself researching something like how long food keeps in the freezer.
Well if the power had been out another day, it all would have needed to be pitched.
What a crazy week! I can see how you’d be excited over seeing Hamilton, and then a storm and power outage. Hopefully there will be less drama this week😁
Yes, an exciting, crazy and exhausting week. I was going to do a Walmart grocery pickup Friday morning but cancelled it because no power. Thank you Tammy, I certainly would like much less drama this week.
I need to get some marigolds to put around my tomatoes! I’ve heard that keeps the bugs down.
Yes, I was mad I forgot to get them when I bought the tomatoes.
OMG you watched Hamilton??? That’s something I would love to do!
It was stellar. I loved the music. Both my daughter and I went on to research the actual facts of his life afterward. He was an interesting man.
Ugh, I had the power outage issue last summer and had to throw away all the food in my fridge. And I’d actually been doing a better job at the time about having food there to eat instead of eating out a lot. So that set me back I think a bit too. We had hot weather most of the week too. My peonies are all bloomed, but my day lilies don’t usually start blooming till June I think. But I can’t wait for that too! Jealous about Hamilton! I’ve watched it on tv, but would love to see it in person. Have a great week!
Thank you Lisa. I was excited to have it tour here. We had to research all about his actual life afterward. I loved the music. This past week it has been SO hot with upper 90s but at least this week will be 80s, but more scattered thunderstorms. The daylilies bloomed in late June and July in Minnesota. But it gets warm earlier here.
Long power outages are no fun at all. And wow, I’m so glad you got to see Hamiliton. Lulu sure looks happy!
Thank you Wendy. It was exciting to see the show with some great music. The storm was exhausting and Lulu was freaked out so she’s been barking whenever we put her in the crate now.
To eat or not eat the food…that is the question. I had the internet, the FDA, and a trusted friend telling me NOT to eat the food after a recent power outage of several hours, but then my 80-yo email pal who has lived through everything told me it was 100% fine to eat the food, so we did, and neither of us got sick.
Love the photos of cute Lulu.
Well we threw some things, kept others. Lulu has been totally shaken by the storm and now barks her head off whenever we put her in the crate.
I love the pics of your day lillies – they are so beautiful! Sorry to hear about your outage – we went through a spell of them when they were working on the power supply a couple of years ago and I recall what a worry it was about the frozen food:(. I hope you manage to catch up on your lost sleep in the coming week, Anne – and there are no more storms!
Thank you Sarah. It seems early for daylilies but this is not Minnesota. We are headed into a thunderstormy week but we need the rain. The temperatures will be cooler too. More like 25C instead of 32C. I hope to get more restful sleep but Lulu is so freaked out about the storm she now barks when she is in her crate.
Glad Lulu is doing well. Your flowers look beautiful. Enjoy your new books!
Thank you Tizzy. I love having the perennials which I worked to establish over the last 3 years. Lulu was upset by the storm but she will hopefully be her usual self soon.
Sounds like you’ve had a busy week. I’m glad you got some good sleep yesterday. Hopefully, you got some last night as well. I hope you have a good week.
Thank you. I’m still working on getting better sleep.
Free books are the best books! Have a great week!
It was a great week, as usual, for freebies!
Power outages are so disruptive! I love your photos, the day lilies are absolutely stunning. Have a good week.
yes I am not a fan of the power outage. Thank you Louise. I am so happy to have perennials I worked to set up the last few years.
My parents lost power for about 6 hours on Thursday near Asheville too. That must have been some storm. But it isn’t as hot there and the outage didn’t last as long. I’m glad it wasn’t worse. And how fun to see Hamilton!
Enjoy your week!
Thank you. I was also glad the storm and power outage didn’t happen during Hamilton or our drive home.
Sounds like you´ve had a crazy week. Holy moly *lol* Love the picture from your front yard. It looks great. I have some orange daylilies, too. But with the new plans for the garden, they will be taken out in a couple of days or weeks. Depends on my mood *smile*. Thank you for sharing the wonderful pictures. Happy reading.
Thank you Vi! I’m glad to have the garden all set up and mostly maintenance now.
Fun that you were able to see Hamilton and got your flowers in. Bummer about the power outage but glad the food seems okay and it came on before the heat wave. We had power flickers through our last storm, but it stayed on. That storm brought golf ball size hail up in Northern Michigan and I’m relieved we missed that. Yay for Lulu’s good vet visit. Reminds me that I need to get out vet visit set up for next month.
Have a good week, Anne!
Thanks Sophia. It was very hectic week. I was glad to get to see Hamilton and that we got home before the storm hit. The whole house shook.
loved all your pics and glad lulu is doing good
Thanks Sherry. Lulu was pretty freaked out by the storm.
We lost power too! It was because of a snowstorm on Friday / Saturday. The power in the house came back pretty quick, but it took an entire day to get power at work. It’s a frustrating experience. I just want my stuff to work!
Ha! You had snow we had 97 degrees heat and hail. I was worried about hot it was getting with the power out.
Sounds like you had a busy week! We are getting a whole house generator for power outages for our new place because of wildfires the electric company will shut it off whenever they think there’s a danger with the power lines. I actually rented a cottage by the ocean in Northern California where they shut off the power but the owner had a generator and it automatically kicked on and we weren’t affected by the interruption until we tried to fill our car with gas at a local station. Finally found one that was still operating because they were on a generator. Glad the power came back on without too much fuss for you!
Nice that Lulu is doing well with the extra care you’re giving her. Our cat scratches a lot during the summer and I never thought about allergies. He might be allergic to some of the plants he prowls through.
Rachel, I’ve been considering solar power with battery backup. yes I think Lulu is having less skin issues with the homemade food. So we will see if she has allergies or if it was something missing in her food before.
Glad Lulu had a good vet visit💜 She’s looking adorable.
You saw Hamilton? Fantastic!
Have a great week, Anne!
Thanks Jonetta! We did enjoy Hamilton. Lulu really freaked out from the storm so she’s been barking more when she is alone in the crate. So hopefully she’ll get comfortable soon.
Power outages suck. I’m glad you didn’t have to wait long. We get them often up here, but more so in the winter. It’s been a busy week. Mom came on Thursday, and then within hours of her arriving, my dad went into the hospital back at home. He’s doing okay and neighbors have been a godsend. We’ve had a busy weekend with my son’s senior prom, daughter’s dance recital and tonight is my son’s last regular season lacrosse game.
It seemed like forever to get power. You really did have a difficult and busy week.
Sounds like a very busy week for you.
I love that you where able to go to Hamilton. How was it?
Have a great week and happy reading?
Thank you Maureen. It was a hectic week. We really enjoyed Hamilton.
I hate when the power goes out.
I’m glad to hear that Lulu is in pretty good health.
It seemed like forever for the power to come back on especially since the temperature was going to 97. Lulu is in good shape but was really freaked out with the storm.
The daylilies are looking spectacular. Keep cool and enjoy the freebies 🙂
Thank you! I love my flower gardens.
What a week! Sorry to hear about the power outage. We had a nasty storm over the weekend and gladly didn’t lose power because it was pretty hot. Love that photo of Lulu all stretched out.
Yes I was worried with the temp getting to 97. Lulu has had an upsetting week with the storm.
You had a busy week! We have had to deal with power outages a lot over the years and I am a pro at cooking on gas stoves and living out of coolers at this point. My new house has an electric stove though so I guess I would have to use the grill. I am sorry that you had to deal with the storms and hail. Yuck! Yay for getting to go see Hamilton! That sounds like fun! It sounds like the diet you are feeding Lulu is doing the job. I hope that you are having a great week, Anne!
Thank you Carole. It was one hectic week. When our kitchen was under renovation and we didn’t have the stove I used the grill and the burner it has. Lulu loves her homemade food and it is improving her health.
Sounds like you had a busy week! I’m so glad Lulu is doing well and daylilies make me so happy. I love that creamy color of the one in the picture you shared. Yay for Hamilton! I’ve never seen it in person though I’ve watched the recording on Disney + multiple times. I hope you are having a wonderful week!
Thank you Katherine. I had not seen Hamilton in any format so it was an impact. I loved the music. I’m happy to have my perennials doing their thing with little of my effort now that I spent the last few years setting them up. I do a bit of weeding and watering and adding nutrient to the soils but it’s easy now.
