Sunday Post – 14 August 2022 @kimbacaffeinate @readingreality

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly  @ Caffeinated Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news~ A post to recap the past week, and showcase books and things we have received.

Don’t forget to look at my giveaways on the right sidebar.  Last day to enter Read-along giveaway!

Sunday,  the actual temp is a little cooler because it is cloudy.   More beans are up and much higher.  I got some book mail last night. We had a nice group for the Read-along Facebook chat.

Monday,  I got up a bit early and did some work.  Then Lulu and I went to pickup curbside at Sam’s Club and Wegman’s. But first I had to unload the soil and cow manure from the car since I forgot to do it before, because it was so hot.  I spent a couple hours trying to figure out what series to read in September for Series in a Month.  I watered the garden during dinner.

Tuesday,  I got started earlyish.   Something has been digging out the dirt in the two small planters on my front porch which is killing the pansies.  I have impatiens to plant there so I planted those today.  I don’t know if it’s lizards or squirrels.   I also pulled some weeds when I took Lulu out and watered a bit.   I tried to go through a pile of emails from publishers and decide what I could take to review.  I’m already a bit over loaded.  At least I’m reading well. Now to get the reviews written.  It got very cloudy, didn’t rain, so I grabbed Lulu and went out to walk a couple miles. It was humid but only mid 80s than 90s.  I saw the the adult swans across the pond.  I relaxed a bit and knitted.  Then I made a new recipe for Eggplant Parmesan.  Oh yum!

Wednesday, was not an early start and it’s an oven again.  I had a bunch of requests approved so I set up the shells for them.  I watered while the soup was simmering.  Then when we had dinner,  it poured rain for a quick storm.

Thursday, was another later start but I got going well on my tasks.  The weather was cloudy and not as hot about 85F / 30C  with a real feel of 92F so I mowed the back yard and did the edging in front before the battery died and it poured rain during dinner.  I did get in a good walk with Lulu before dinner.  After dinner I worked on the menu plan to finalize it so I could create a shopping list.  I’m going to run some errands tomorrow.  I have all these lovely garden tomatoes, about 5-6 for now,  so I looked up recipes for homemade tomato sauces.

Friday, I did some blog visiting and emails.  I picked tomatoes to make a sauce for dinner tomorrow.  Then I did the errand run to the garden center,  a gluten free bakery, the post office and last to Aldi.  It’s too early for fall veggie plants but I did get a few sale perennials.  Another day where I walked Lulu; it was warm but felt nice even though I was a bit sticky afterwards.  After dinner, I finally worked on my garden sheets and documentation to prepare for planting. I added watering information since that may be why I’m having trouble with some plants in the front planter.

Saturday,  today is the best kind of weather.  Not only are temps in the low to mid 80F / 26C +   but the wind is from the north and the humidity is low, so the real feel is the same as the temperature instead of 5-10 degrees warmer. I worked awhile on my garden sheets; this is going to take awhile because I didn’t do it last fall after I planted. I did more edging and mowing and planted 2 of the new plants  after hauling out new soil for them. Then I had to stop to come in and make the roasted tomato sauce and take a second shower.  We used the garden tomatoes and basil,  along with some onions, oregano, and 3 heads of garlic. We did end up blending it in the Ninja.    It was yummy!

Of course, I’m going to do the Read A Series in a Month Challenge. If you want to see all the rules and the signup it’s HERE.   I’ll be buddy reading the Will Robie series by David Baldacci with Berls.

  • The Innocent
  • The Hit
  • The Target
  • The Guilty
  • End Game

We plan to get the books from the library on audio.

Stacking the Shelves is hosted by Marlene at  Reading Reality.  These are the exciting ARCs I received this week (If you click on the cover, it will take you to the Goodreads entry):

My grateful thanks to PRH Audio,    Delacorte Press,  Gallery Books,  William Morrow,  AceRoc Books,  Berkley Romance.

(If you click on the cover, it will take you to the Goodreads entry)

NONE.

Now the really scary one. This is all the Kindle and Audible freebies I grabbed this past week. You can see why I need to do Thrifty Thursday to be sure I read a few at least one each month.

I really meant to cut back on freebies BUT  they are free so I guess that won’t be happening.

I’m not including things like reviews posted or upcoming as they are always in the right sidebar. And, my challenge status is also there.

  1. The roasted tomato sauce sounds delicious! I need to pick up some some more tomatoes at the farmer’s market soon. I’m missing tomato sandwiches! Love the picture of Lulu. She’s such a cutie. Have a wonderful week!

  2. I can’t imagine reading a series in a month, even if it were a short series. I like to mix things up so much that I can’t remember the last time I read two books by the same author in the same month period. Plus, all the new books I’ve got ARCs to review….

Good luck, however. I admire you for taking that challenge on.

    • Thank Mark. I did something similar after the last month or so with the Cork O’Connor series in July and August since I had 6 or so to read before the latest one this month. I’d have read them sooner but waited for the David Chandler narration. But it’s also part of the reason I do the Read-along is for urban fantasy or fantasy series which have an overall story arc and when you read them all a year apart it’s hard to match up all the details for better understanding.

  3. Cute pic of Lulu! 🙂 It poured here today- very cool and just lots of rain.

    Love tomatoes from the garden…

As usual I see some books that look promising! The Hidden Grave looks good.

    • Thanks Greg. Lulu was dancing. She wanted my attention. Even being VERY careful about which freebies I take I still get so many. And I am careful so they all look great to me. The tomatoes were awesome and there will be more plus BASIL. I’m getting excited to plant the fall crops.

    • Thanks Naida. I’ve even already read Love on the Brain. Audiobook ARCs often come closer to release so I tend to listen to them shortly after they arrive. Lulu was dancing; my daughter has been teaching her. lol I love having a garden with fresh produce.

    • Sorry? I’ve already read Love on the Brain now because audiobooks arrive closer to release date so I tend to start them soon after I get them. (it’s really good) I love having all my fresh herbs and veggies. It’s almost year round here as opposed to the 4 month garden I got in Minnesota. But the soil was MUCH better in Iowa and Minnesota.

    • Thank you for the tip! In this case it’s a flower pot that is maybe only 8 inches in diameter so I don’t know where I would put the mulch. Thankfully they don’t seem to be bothering the new impatiens. The tomatoes are delicious, especially with basil. I love having the garden.

  4. Your garden sounds like it is doing awesome! I am debating trying a fall planting. I have never done one before! My brussels sprouts also finally have little brussels sprouts, so I am excited!

    • That is exciting Erin! I get so thrilled when they are only peeking out of the ground. I couldn’t do a fall planting in Minnesota but here it is a thing. I planted chard last fall that we are still eating. The same happened with broccoli one year, we were eating it in January! It just doesn’t get cold for long periods here. I guess carrots and potatoes do well over winter also. I don’t have that much garden space, although I got a raised bed planter to do lettuces in and by moving it into the shade over summer, may be able to do 3 lettuce crops.

    • Thank you Tammy! The week’s forecast is all in the 80s but the real joy is that the real feel is the temp so forecast 84, real feel 84, whereas before the temps were forecast 85-95 but the real feel was always 5-10 hotter. I love the garden. I enjoy the farmer’s market too but I don’t get there as often as I would like.

  5. First of all, Lulu’s picture is adorable!!! It makes me smile so much! I’m also jealous of your ARC of the new Ali Hazelwood book! I’ll probably listen to it on audio eventually. Unless I buy it and read it that way like I did with the first one. I have moles in my yard, although they don’t seem to be making as many holes this time. Not sure if there are less or if the ground being more dry this year makes a difference? They’ve made my yard so bumpy and uneven I feel like I’m on a roller coaster when I’m mowing with my push mower! Hope you have a good week!

    • Thank you Lisa. My daughter has been teaching Lulu to dance. She always got on her hind legs but she’s doing more with it now. I’ve already listened to Love on the Brain and it’s great. Audio arcs tend to come closer to release so I listen to them quickly.

  6. You really got a lot done between the steamy heat and rains. Our tomatoes are coming in now and I’ve enjoyed slipping them into several meals with the cukes and peppers. I only grew parsley and cilantro this year for herbs, but maybe next year I’ll get back to the basil, thyme, and garlic.

Looks like a good pick for your Series in a Month and buddy up. I’m doing the Binti trilogy. I tend to grab way too may review request books, too. But, they look good so I guess that is worth it. 🙂

    Have a good week, Anne!

    • Thank you Sophia! I don’t always get very many tomatoes at one time. I only have 2 plants. But I have made salsa with a similar roasting process to the one I used for the sauce last night. I can’t imagine summer without basil! The rosemary and sage and chives are year round here so always available. The thing is some of those arcs are for 2023. I am pretty selective but I also read a lot.

  7. It was HOT last week! Thankfully, this weekend has been lovely, and the coming week doesn’t look too bad temperature-wise, though heaven knows what the humidity will be like. Still, I’ll take mid-80s over mid-90s!

I’ve got the Miss Marple anthology, too. I’m looking forward to it, but at the same time, I’m a little apprehensive about what some of those authors will do with the character. Want to buddy-read?

Lark @ The Bookwyrm's Hoard recently posted: Sunday Post – 8/14/2022
    • I think the temperature so far has been great not just because of the temp drop but the fact that the real feel isn’t inflating the fell by 5-10 degrees, lower humidity? I’m still working in the later day or early because the sun can be blazing.

I would like to buddy read but I’d have to look at the schedule because with the Read-along, Series in a Month and book club I may be overbooked and have to squeeze it in as a story a day kind of thing. I’ll message you after I give it a day of thought. It’s unlikely I will get to it until September because August 23 is the motherlode of releases.

Anne - Books of My Heart recently posted: 🎧 In the Pines by Kendra Elliot
      • Yes, the lower humidity definitely helped. Although it’s been raining all day today here (on Tuesday.)

No worries; let me know if the buddy-read thing works out, and otherwise I’ll get to it when I get to it, and you’ll get to it when you get to it! Yes, lots of new releases coming up. I have a few ARCs I need to try to get through, too.

    • I’m not sure what it was but it’s not bothering the impatiens. Yes the temp has finally got more reasonable. It’s still hot mid-day but now I can do stuff early or late. It kind of interferes with cooking dinner especially with both yard work and wanting to walk Lulu.

  8. Man that tomato sauce looks and sounds delicious!!! Nothing like tomatoes from the garden! Well, I would imagine anyway. Can’t say I’ve ever had one straight from the garden.

  9. That sauce looks delish! And I love that it’s from your garden. It’s been way too hot here lately too but it’s finally cooling off. I love how organized you are and want to be you when I grow up one day! Lol!!!

I need to read more Baldacci. When I’m done with school I’m reading ALL THE BOOKS!

    Stephanie @ Once Upon a Chapter recently posted: The Sunday Post {8/14/22}
    • Stephanie! It’s great to hear from you. I’m glad school is not forever because I miss hearing your thoughts. I love having the garden and we just keep working on learning all the differences between IA/MN gardening and NC gardening. It’s different. I can’t wait until you read This Side of the Grave. I do organize and plan A LOT but that helps me when it goes off the rails because I have considered all the options and know exactly what I want to do. I still want to read even more books though.

Anne - Books of My Heart recently posted: Series on Saturday: FBI series
  10. It sounds like you were able to get a lot done this week. Nice that you had enough tomatoes from the garden to make a sauce. I bet Lulu is enjoying all of her walks. Nice new reads this week! I hope you have a wonderful week!

  11. I’m very new to vegetable gardening so I wonder what you do with garden sheets? I plan on building a couple of above ground gardening boxes for part of our property. Fenced in to keep the deer out, mind you, and I’m going to have to do some research on how-to and what to plant. Not sure if I can get it done before the fall, though, but crossing my fingers. Otherwise I’ll have to wait until spring I think.

Loved the Will Robie series! Hope you do, too. Can’t wait to hear what you think. Hope he comes out with more books in the series.

    • Thanks Rachel. Garden sheets are my own documentation in two formats to give me all the information I gather from multiple sources. I’ll email you one of them. It’s a Word document. Then I do a sketch on graph paper with what all the plants are in a bed. Last, I used to do this anyway, I took tracing paper and used color pencils to put in the color of what was blooming for each month so there would be 6 months worth for Minnesota. That’s just for flower beds. Texture and form is just as important as color though. I don’t do any of them for vegetable gardening. I keep that in my head and move stuff around depending on what works and doesn’t in a location. I love everything David Baldacci so far so I am excited and not worried.

  12. That’s a fine looking crop of tomatoes – and the soup you made from it looks delicious. I’ve seen Love on the Brain on quite a few blogs – I hope you enjoy it!

  13. It’s funny to read that you might have lizards digging in your comment. Definitely a foreign concept to me. LOL!

I’ll have to check out Rules of Engagement – I’ve never read a book by Stacey Abrams, and I’m very curious. I need to pay closer attention to adult books because I’m working at Barnes and Noble now, so I’ll have to go check out your reviews from this week!!

    • Thanks Nicole. Lizards are new to me in NC. I like them. They are really cute. I don’t know if they dig though, it might be something else? I see them on the concrete of the porch and on my fence sometimes. Thankfully, they don’t go in the house. I hope they and the frogs in my yard are eating all the mosquitos!

My blog certainly has a variety of genres since there are 4 of us with some different tastes.

  14. I keep thinking Jim Butcher has a new book out when I see those by his son. The covers look way too much a like. LOL. I love that pic of Lulu. She’s a cutie. The weather suddenly dropped this week – which is too chilly for me. I’m not ready for fall yet, as that means cold and dark will be here soon. Hopefully we’ll get some more summer weather soon. I did a lot of shopping with the kiddos this week – getting stuff for my son to take to college. He’s got two more weeks.

    • ikr? I keep confusing them thinking I might get another Dresden book. I’m going to give the son’s book a try. My daughter is teaching Lulu to dance. The command is dance and then sashay so she goes side to side. Lulu always got up on her back legs but now she does it to commands. We’ve dropped about 10 degrees and it’s excellent. I think we will get some warmer weather yet but I love this. It’s the weather we get about 6-8 months of the year.
