Against all odds, Kerrigan Argon passed her dragon training. She’s now an official member of the Society. Everything should be well. But somehow, nothing is.

Her dark prince, Fordham Ollivier, has disappeared in hopes to break his curse.

An unwanted wedding looms in her future.

And the council election draws ever nearer. An election that she’s been unceremoniously nominated for.

If all of that wasn’t enough, the Red Masks, an anti-half Fae, anti-human terrorist organization, are gaining ground. All because they have a spy inside the mountain, inside the Society itself.

Someone is leading these monsters. And Kerrigan is determined to stop them at all costs.

In the  Royal Houses series, Kerrigan is a half fae who takes up the cause of the half fae and humans who are degraded and sometimes enslaved by the fae.  She managed to win the tournament and get her own dragon, and become a member of the Society.  The Society is  sort of a law enforcement agency of fae on dragons, to protect the different Houses and their lands.

I’ve loved all the world building and Kerrigan’s learning about dragons and her magic.  Kerrigan has fallen in love with Fordham but she is betrothed to Ashby who she hates.  Ford has left to try to break his curse.  Kerrigan has recently reconciled with her father.  As she approaches her name day, 18th birthday,  two new big things happen which are spoilers.   She leaves abruptly after the name day to save Ford because she sees his death in a vision.

She and Ford then continue together to try to break his curse.  They also need to fight the Red Masks and identify the Father.  They know something big is happening on council election day. In each book so far, there’s been some back and forth with a big battle of action near the end.  House of Curses ends in a big blow up with Kerrigan and Ford together but in dire straits.

I guessed a bit of this and even who the Father, head of the Red Masks is.  It’s very Empire Strikes Back here and some things go poorly for our heroes.  I have high hopes for them next year in House of Gods.  The series really needs to be read in order.

Narration:

I was glad to have the same narrator continue with the series. I enjoyed the performance and rather different voices for males and females.  We get Kerrigan’s point of view and she became Kerrigan for me. Kerrigan’s voice does sound a bit whiny at times.  I was able to listen at my usual 1.5x speed.

  1. I read the translation for the French publisher before publishing and I finished book 2. I confess that I’m really curious to read this one too now! Plus I thought it would be a trilogy so it’s nice to see we will have more
