Seventeen-year-old Everly Hart became a āgrieverā the day she witnessed a tragic death. Imbued with a second sight, she can now see what others cannotāsupernatural creatures called grimms.
Then she receives an invitation from the Grimm Society to attend Gravemark, an exclusive school where grievers are trained to track and reap grimms. Everly thought navigating high school and dating was tough, but now her school assignments can kill her.
As victims pile up, Everly must put her investigative skills to the test and hunt the latest grimm serial killer, proving that not all princes are charming, and not all fairy tales have happy endings.
The Grimm Society is the first book in a series of the same name following Everly as she goes through a traumatic event with the loss of a parent that opens her up to being a Griever, someone who can see the Grimms living in this world.Ā She is invited to be part of a secret society and attend an exclusive school where she can learn about Grimms and the best way to keep herself alive.
I enjoy a good magic school and the thing I liked about this is that the magic was seeing through the veil so to speak.Ā Other than that and studying the different Grimms, there wasn’t any other big magic that the student themselves possess.Ā Instead Everly has been unknowingly groomed for this her entire life by her detective father.Ā He taught her how to profile and read people along with so investigative skills and self defense.Ā She might not have known why until after he died but she is learning fast that there was more to her family than she was ever aware of.
There is a mystery of who is killing hikers in the area.Ā It has been suggested by normals that it is a big cougar in the area.Ā But, Everly and the other students at Gravemark are sure it has to be a Grimm and now they are trying to figure out what kind it could be and how to track them.Ā Everly has never had a lot of luck dating either.Ā She has had a ‘small’ crush on her best friends brother for years now, but never acted on it.Ā They are now at the same school and there is another boy that she can’t decide if she wants to kiss or hit.Ā A few sparks are flying everywhere in this very minor love triangle
This was a really fun introductory book to the world, the magic, the mysteries and I had fun with it.Ā I did figure out a lot of the plot points early, but it was still fun getting to the climax of the story.Ā Great if you like who-dun-its and schools for the magically inclined.
Narration:
Amy McFadden did really well with the narration and emotion of the characters.Ā She was able to capture the voice of the main female teenage character well and make all the side characters distinguishable.Ā Her voice of the grandmother was a lot of fun and added some humorous relief in some of the more serious moments.Ā I did think the production ran a little slow for my taste and so I increased the listening speed of 1.75x instead of my usual 1.5x speed.
