Sloan McPherson and the Underwater Investigation Unit have discovered a van at the bottom of a murky Florida pond. Sealed inside the watery tomb are the bodies of four teenagers who disappeared thirty years ago after leaving a rock concert. To authorities, it looks like a tragic accident. To Sloan, it looks like murder. Every piece of evidence is starting to connect to a string of cold case vanishings throughout Florida. Clue by clue, Sloan navigates the warm, dark waters where natural predators feed, knowing that the most dangerous one is still above the surface - nesting and dormant.

But when a fresh young kill is found in the Everglades, Sloan fears that her investigation has reawakened a monster. How can she catch someone who’s a genius at hiding in plain sight? By acting as prey. The dangerous gambit is working - only too well. She’s being lured into a deception of the madman’s own design. Has Sloan set a trap for a serial killer? Or has he set one for her?

I was excited to continue this series.  The fledgling agency is fighting for its life.  However, the new member Hughes is a good member. George is restraining Sloan, but he knows the politics better.

Sloan is incredibly smart and dedicated.  She figures out things with hard work and educated guesses solidified with evidence.  She also can be a bit impulsive and willing to take some risks.  Her personal life doesn’t really go anywhere.

The case takes up all the oxygen in Black Coral.  When diving for something else, Sloan finds a van with 4 dead teenagers that have been missing for years.  Other law enforcement is quick to say, they got drunk/high and accidentally drove into the lake.  But many things don’t add up.   Meanwhile,  George wants her on the burglary raiders case.  They eventually come up with a strategy for catching them. But Sloan pushes and continues to inch towards solving the dead teens which turns out to be connected to others, and a serial killer.

I’m excited to see where things go with Sloan and the UiU.

A distress call draws rescuers Sloan McPherson and the Underwater Investigation Unit to a cruise ship off the coast of Fort Lauderdale that’s sinking from a mysterious explosion. When it appears to be the work of an ecoterrorist and other ships are threatened, it becomes a race against time. More clues are discovered, and evidence is in danger of being washed away by a coming tropical storm. Sloan grows concerned that key details are being ignored, and a strange lack of urgency by authorities sets off alarms.

As the troubling questions compound, Sloan is determined to chase down every lead she has. Her persistence is getting her closer to the truth: that there’s something far more troubling at play than the official explanation. It’s also putting Sloan on a collision course with an enemy more powerful than she realizes, in a case so complex and deadly it may be impossible to prove. Now cracking the case is a matter of staying one step ahead of someone with every resource imaginable to bury Sloan and everything she knows.

The case in Sea Storm is incredibly complex. Sloan and Hughes continue to work well together.  Their work is smart and capable, doing serious important work.  They do their jobs well and give up their credit,  but collect many more other jealous agencies and enemies in the corrupt and rich, and those on the edges not prosecuted. I am tense for their sake, not sure how they go from here.

George seems less involved now that Sloan has Hughes as a partner.  They work well together and it’s good they each have the backup of each other.  It’s fortunate George has the experience and connections to give them some protection and options to keep working.  I’m still worried about how they will continue.

I do appreciate how Sloan is growing both in her investigative skills and the politics of the work.  But she also is clear on the value of her family and giving them more priority when she can.

When a young woman washes ashore on a Fort Lauderdale beach, Sloan McPherson of the Underwater Investigation Unit is called in to consult. Sloan’s instinct says murder, but even then, there are too many questions.

For answers she reaches out to Gwen Wylder. The Miami homicide detective is notorious for being manipulative, bitter, a tyrant to her peers, and wicked smart. And she demands something in return from Sloan: fresh insight into seemingly unrelated cold-case murders and disappearances—and a possible serial killer trolling the Florida coast.

As loose ends of the old files begin to come together, another woman disappears. Sloan and Gwen are certain she’s the newest link in a deadly chain. They are determined to track her down before she dies, but they soon find themselves in uncharted waters. And the deeper Sloan and Gwen go, the stranger the case gets.

Sea Castle seems even more removed for the UIU than Sea Storm.  George, Hughes and Sloan are separated most of the book. Sloan is loaned out to report to FDLE and her boss really doesn’t like her.  So she finds another “misfit,”  Gwen Wilder to work cases with her.

Gwen is more disliked and more reckless than Sloan.  It is a perfect learning opportunity for Sloan to temper herself and work more carefully and politically correct.  She still uses her underwater skills and some great technology from Hughes to develop ideas and gather key evidence.

Together Gwen and Sloan, with Sloan doing the field work, solve some long unsolved cases.  They put a serial killer our of business. The killer is unusual and it takes out of the box thinking, and methods,  to figure out the culprit.

After the Underwater Investigation Unit’s disbandment, public outcry ushers Sloan McPherson and her partner, former navy diver Scott Hughes, back into the depths of crime solving. But Sloan’s return comes with a personal case. Longtime family friend Fred Stafford has disappeared. Left his abandoned truck in the vicinity of an unmarked sinkhole and new findings that have Sloan second-guessing everything she thought she knew about the man. There are his gambling debts, his association with a treasure-hunting band of underwater cavern junkies called the Dive Rats, and most alarming of all, a discovery in Stafford’s storage shed that raises the stakes even higher and plunges Sloan into an unfathomable mystery. As Sloan’s investigation unfolds, a tragic Florida cold case, local superstitions, and a shocking conspiracy collide. For Sloan, finding Stafford and uncovering the buried secrets of the past soon drag her deeper into the dark unknown than she feared.

The UIU continues to be in limbo but Sloan and Hughes are famous for their efforts, so they get asked to help with cases.  In Dark Dive, we see a bit more of George and now Gwen has joined their unit.   They work through cold cases and Hughes continues to play with robot tech to increase their safety for use in more dangerous dive situations.

A friend calls to ask Sloan about an old diving mentor and friend of her father’s since they haven’t seen him lately.  Sloan talks to his girlfriend, and other friends but no one has seen him.  Eventually, the team is drawn into the hunt as they try to figure out what work he might have been doing. They discover he was in debt from gambling.  There is also his interest in sinkholes and cave diving.

When his truck is found, and some pieces of dive gear, they wonder if he has had an accident or tried to disappear himself.  Things get complex and the team works to follow different leads.  I enjoy the fast pacing of all the stories in this series.  The characters are unique and smart.  It is very interesting to learn about diving and various underwater tools.

Sloan continue to build her skills. Hughes is a good partner in going after evidence but also keeping more safe.  Gwen and George are awesome at the foundation of research and connections.  I really hope for more in this series and more life for the UIU.

Narration:

Susannah Jones is a talented narrator. I know Robin has listened to her many times.  I found her voice comfortable and appropriate.  She seemed a fit for the voice of Sloan, the main character.  Her voices for other characters felt distinct and appropriate. Although Sloan’s daughter seemed more high pitched than necessary.   I was able to listen at my usual 1.5x speed.
