I needed to figure out a way to start reading series where I am not current or the series is finished but haven’t read them yet.  So it’s a way to commit myself to read my backlist, particularly series.

I have been wanting to read the Brothers Sinister series for awhile after reading the first one. I own the box set so I have them all. I really enjoy this author’s style and characters.

Miss Jane Fairfield can’t do anything right. When she’s in company, she always says the wrong thing—and rather too much of it. No matter how costly they are, her gowns fall on the unfortunate side of fashion. Even her immense dowry can’t save her from being an object of derision.

And that’s precisely what she wants. She’ll do anything, even risk humiliation, if it means she can stay unmarried and keep her sister safe.

Mr. Oliver Marshall has to do everything right. He’s the bastard son of a duke, raised in humble circumstances—and he intends to give voice and power to the common people. If he makes one false step, he’ll never get the chance to accomplish anything. He doesn’t need to come to the rescue of the wrong woman. He certainly doesn’t need to fall in love with her. But there’s something about the lovely, courageous Jane that he can’t resist... even though it could mean the ruin of them both.

It took me a long time, nearly 6 weeks to read The Heiress Effect, only because I had so much going on in my life I fell asleep without reading at night. I actually read the book all in 3 nights.

Jane is amazing in her spirit and caring for others.  I loved seeing how smart she was, too.  The man trying to humiliate her had no idea the hornet’s nest he would stir.   Oliver has a great family and friends which Jane doesn’t have.   Jane is so alone and accepts so little for herself.  I worried for her but in the end Oliver had her back.

Oliver had started out fighting for everything but eventually learned to keep his mouth shut and work in the background.  Jane teaches him a thing or two about politics.  I love their honest conversations and banter.

The pacing was good and the difficulties of this time period for women are clear.  At least Jane has money, but it’s little help for her sister who is controlled by an inept guardian. Jane nearly falls to an unscrupulous suitor, anyway.  Luckily, her sister Emily manages to make a friend too.   I really want to see how the rest of their friend circle manages and hopefully see this couple again in future books.
