WHO DO YOU LOVE?
One question, a split-second decision, and Brian Darby lies dead on the kitchen floor. His wife, state police trooper Tessa Leoni, claims to have shot him in self-defense, and bears the bruises to back up her tale. For veteran detective D. D. Warren it should be an open-and-shut case. But where is their six-year-old daughter?
AND HOW FAR WOULD YOU GO . . .
As the homicide investigation ratchets into a frantic statewide search for a missing child, D. D. Warren must partner with former lover Bobby Dodge to break through the blue wall of police brotherhood, seeking to understand the inner workings of a trooper’s mind while also unearthing family secrets. Would a trained police officer truly shoot her own husband? And would a mother harm her own child?
. . . TO SAVE HER?
For Tessa Leoni, the worst has not yet happened. She is walking a tightrope, with nowhere to turn, no one to trust, as the clock ticks down to a terrifying deadline. She has one goal in sight, and she will use every ounce of her training, every trick at her disposal, to do what must be done. No sacrifice is too great, no action unthinkable. A mother knows who she loves. And all others will be made to pay.
Love you more . . .

This is the fifth book in the D.D. Warren series and the first in a spinoff series about Tessa Leoni. With this book, I found on Goodreads there’s actually “the Gardner Universe” which consists of three series that all overlap a bit. It includes the D.D. Warren series, the Tessa Leoni series and the first series that started it all the FBI Profiler series. This story introduces us to Tessa Leoni, who’s a state trooper and has to make a call that no law enforcement officer ever wants to make, to call the police to a crime scene that involves themselves and their family. Her husband is dead and her daughter is missing.
As with most of Gardner‘s stories, we get this story from multiple POVs and it isn’t in straight chronological order. We’re mostly in the present time, but there’s also flashbacks, which help us understand the story. However, often, the flashbacks leave you with more questions than prior to the flashbacks. And the flashbacks aren’t always in any kind of order, but for you to learn a piece of information you need at the time.
I really love these books by Ms Gardner. She creates characters that I get invested in and want to see succeed in the end. She also has tricky stories and that she uses to take you on twists and turns, so you never know where the story is going to go. And you never know exactly what happens or who did it until Ms. Gardner wants you to know. And she’s usually pretty clever in the reveal.
Narration:
This story is narrated by Kirsten Potter and Katie MacNichol, each taking a different POV. It really helps to tell when the POV changes. They both really brought the characters to life. Kirsten Potter is part of all the D.D. Warren books and does a great job with D.D.’s with POV and voice. Katie MacNichol did a great job with Tessa Leoni’s POV. She doesn’t take over that series, but she does a great job with the character. I would for sure listen to either of them again.
