Dina DeMille doesn’t run your typical Bed and Breakfast. Her inn defies laws of physics, her fluffy dog is secretly a monster, and the only paying guest is a former Galactic tyrant with a price on her head. But the inn needs guests to thrive, and guests have been scarce, so when an Arbitrator shows up at Dina's door and asks her to host a peace summit between three warring species, she jumps on the chance.
Unfortunately, for Dina, keeping the peace between Space Vampires, the Hope-Crushing Horde, and the devious Merchants of Baha-char is much easier said than done. On top of keeping her guests from murdering each other, she must find a chef, remodel the inn... and risk everything, even her life, to save the man she might fall in love with. But then it's all in the day's work for an Innkeeper...
Sweep in Peace by Ilona Andrews is the second book in the Innkeeper Chronicles, an urban sci-fantasy with ties to the Edge series. Here we return to the Gertrude Hunt, a simple Bed & Breakfast in small suburban Texas. Except the Gertrude Hunt is anything but ordinary, hosting guests from across the galaxy.
Dina Demille is the Innkeeper for Gertrude Hunt, her powers and that of the inn’s are linked. As the inn grows, so does Dina’s powers to host more guests. Currently, her only resident is an aristocrat wanted for war crimes on several planets and living out her exile on Earth. When George Camarine asks Dina to host a peace summit among the Holy Cosmic Anocracy (space vampires), the Otrokars aka the Hope-Crushing Horde, and the Merchant clan of Baha-char, she really doesn’t have much choice. She needs money, she needs to up her star rating, and she needs to find what happened to her parents.
Andrews continues building on the world that was introduced in Clean Sweep. I really loved learning more about the different species and how the inn and its magic worked. Also, we got a surprise in the form of grown-up George, Jack, and Lark. I loved seeing them in this book, even if I sided with Dina and wanted to strangle George at times The story revolves around the peace summit, the need for it, and how all sides want it, but don’t know how to come to an agreement of it. There are several new characters introduced, my favorite being Orro, a chef Dina hires to feed all the guests. He’s overdramatic to the point that I laughed out loud multiple times.
Overall, I really enjoyed Sweep in Peace. The story is never short on action, yet it all flows together into one cohesive story. Dina is a patient host, much more than I could be, and I loved seeing how she juggled the different cultures and kept the peace. If you are a fan of urban fantasy, enjoy light sci-fi, or looking for a fun read, I highly recommend it.
Audiobook Note: I opted to listen to the graphic audio for this book. This is my second time on graphic audio, and I loved it just as much as my first time. The story comes to life and adds so much more to the words. And again Orro is my favorite. Listen and you’ll see why

Who said “I entered his name into the Problem Guests database, complete with the description of the apple incident. The next time he attempts to find an inn on Earth, he will find it exceedingly difficult. In fact, I’m pretty sure that he will have to return here. It’s frightening how high you can raise a price of a room when you are the only Innkeeper willing to take the guest in.”
There are other options in the rafflecopter for you to enter discussion questions and quotes to share.
Who said “Yes, I’ll take it to the evening news, because I always wanted to be seen as a complete madman. I would enjoy being locked up for the rest of my life. And my parents, who are still on the planet and are still alien, would be so proud. .” in Clean Sweep is Sean.
The villain was Cousin Orig
Observations and questions you shared from Steel’s Edge:
(Thank you so much for sharing!) If you can answer any of these questions, you can do so in a comment.
- I don’t think I realized that George and Jack were in this one. They’re in the market and you had to be paying attention to realize it was them. They’re not named.
- Only dog IA has ever killed.
Quotes you readers shared from Clean Sweep:
“That’s not a dog,” Sean said. Beast let out a tiny snarl, astonished at the insult. “She weighs what, about six, seven pounds? Now, I’m willing to concede that somewhere in the distant past one of her ancestors might have been a dog. But now she’s an oversized chinchilla.”
“First you insult my house, now you insult my dog.” I leaned on my broom.
“She has little ponytails,” Sean said, nodding at the two tiny ponytails above the Shih Tzu’s eyes. “Her fur gets in her eyes. She’s due for a grooming.” “Aha.” Sean tilted his head to the side. He seemed completely feral now. “You’re asking me to take a dog with two ponytails seriously. ”

I did my series read with the Graphic Audio edition, too. Loved it! This was so exciting seeing if they’d pull off the peace contract.
I also have multiple versions of the book and listened to the GA this time. Glad you loved it too.
I love this series. I’ve re-read it a lot. This time I’m listening to the Graphic Audio editions. Loved it! Great review.
I can’t feel bad about encouraging people to reread with me in the Read-along. It’s such a joy. Glad you liked it too.
I have not read it but I enjoyed the ecxerpt.
I fell in love with this series when I read it – but it sounds as if I’d also really enjoy the audiobook experience. Thank you for a lovely review, Anne.
Thanks Sarah I’ve enjoyed both audio versions. I read the GA version this time.

Thank you Kimberly! You are always welcome to join us. Thanks for supporting us in so many Read-alongs.
This was my 4th read/listen. It is amazing to me how many things I’ve either completely forgotten or discovered in this read.
Orro still a great addition to the inn. Loved seeing George Jack and Sophie all grown up and don’t forget Gaston and his man of adventure and skullduggery.
Such a fun series, I’m entertained so much each and every time I read it.
Absolutely! It’s just a favorite and easy to read again and again. Thanks for reading with us.
I loved Sweep in Peace even more the second time around. I tried the Graphic Audio and listened for a while, but just couldn’t get into it. My husband and I love the version with Renee Raudman narrating. I’ll have to try it again sometime!
That happens sometimes when you are a fan of the regular audio you can’t listen to the graphic audio. I’m listening to the Graphic audio for the first time and loving it. So thrilled you are reading with us.
I love this series! I love that anything is possible and that there are so many wonderful/scary/exciting surprises!
Thank you Elizabeth. I love that you are reading with us so much. It’s really a favorite series of mine and I own many formats.

Me too. I’m ecstatic how much some of those I dragged into this who haven’t read it are loving it too.
Gotta love Ilona Andrews!!! I should try this series someday.
It’s Jen’s favorite! One of my favorites too. I highly recommend it.
Such a great book! Can’t we send George to the Middle East right now? lol
I enjoy these every time I read them but it is especially fun when I read them all together like this over a shorter time period and with a group of friends who are both old and new readers.
