Something wicked this way comes…

When her aunt died, level-headed accountant Clare Cermak inherited a fortune—as well as a phantom dog and the power to help ghosts move on. Her new gift led her to Zach Slade, a sexy private investigator with a unique psychic gift of his own, and the man who’s slowly opening her heart. But as they work toward building a future together, a sinister threat emerges.

An evil ghost is ravaging Creede, Colorado, threatening to devour the spirit of an innocent boy. Inexperienced in facing such a powerful ghost—and knowing her spirit, too, could be ripped away—Clare still can't refuse to help. With Zach’s support she uncovers the ghost’s identity, and the ancestral weapon required to slay it. But does Clare dare to use that weapon before the ghost destroys the man she loves—and her own spirit?

I’ve REALLY enjoyed this series.  It has more romance than most urban fantasy and I like that.  I love a situation where a couple is together and works together on their problems or mystery or adventure.  I rated each of the first two books, GHOST SEER and GHOST LAYER, as 5 stars.  I don’t recommend GHOST KILLER as a standalone book.

This is my favorite kind of supernatural – something with the mind – like a witch or clairvoyant or pre-cognition that sort of thing.  Claire is a ghost seer and Zach is a sort of pre-cognizant. Claire has a ghost dog, Enzo, to help her with her cases.

The Clare and Zach relationship is front and center all the time, which is unusual.  It makes it unique. In reality, people aren’t focused solely on their work.  And I say –  it is RARE when both of the people in the couple are honest about their feelings to themselves and mostly honest, to the other person.  I have to give them credit and praise this. They don’t play silly relationship games.

GHOST KILLER starts out with a new case.  It has only been 17 days since they met and Clare started her new work as a ghost seer.  While she and Zach may be adjusting to their new careers, they are comfortable with each other.  I don’t know if it is trying to recap for people who haven’t read the first two books or what, but to me the first 25% of the book felt like nothing happened except the briefest intro to the new case.

I hated how they didn’t seem to know what to do or what would happen. I like smart, organized, planned with learning or action or both. This felt like a hot mess with too much waiting.  If I felt this way, Clare must have felt even worse since she was used to the ordered detail of being a CPA. With a child in danger, Zach and Clare just threw themselves into it without any real preparation.

GHOST KILLER is the third case with this couple and they are a couple.  I expected them to be smarter and to work together more.  Instead they were disorganized, tried to protect each other by doing things alone, and I didn’t like it.  I wanted them to work TOGETHER, so while I enjoy them, this was my least favorite of the series.

  1. Felicia and Jennifer – If you enjoy plenty of romance in your urban fantasy, you might like this series. I really loved the first two books but the third felt like not enough progress somehow. I really hope there is another book where I can feel better about them. I just had to remind myself that in 3 books, something like 17-20 days have passed so Zach and Claire are in new jobs and a new relationship, which is very fast, so I should be a little more patient.
