For once, mated werewolves Charles and Anna are not traveling because of Charles’s role as his father’s enforcer. This time, their trip to Arizona is purely personal, as Charles plans to buy Anna a horse for her birthday. Or at least it starts out that way...

Charles and Anna soon discover that a dangerous Fae being is on the loose, replacing human children with simulacrums. The Fae’s cold war with humanity is about to heat up—and Charles and Anna are in the cross fire.

I’ll begin by saying Patricia Briggs is an author who is a must read and I love everything.  It is so well-written; it easily captures my attention and emotions.  It is urban fantasy at its best.   Dead Heat is in the Mercy Thompson world but is not really a book in that series.  I would read these books in order and not as a standalone.

Dead Heat is a departure from the usual story for Charles and Anna.  This book focuses more on their private lives than Charles’ work.  There is Anna’s upcoming birthday, visiting an old friend of Charles,  and a personal choice the couple is considering.   There is a mystery and action / adventure.

I love the characters. I love the world. I love the writing.  I love the storylines.  I love how it is different from previous works in the series.  There is really nothing not to love.  Go read it. Now.

About Patricia Briggs

Patricia Briggs was born in Butte, Montana to a children’s librarian who passed on to her kids a love of reading and books. Patricia grew up reading fairy tales and books about horses, and later developed an interest in folklore and history. When she decided to write a book of her own, a fantasy book seemed a natural choice. Patricia graduated from Montana State University with degrees in history and German and she worked for a while as a substitute teacher. Currently, she lives in Montana with her children and six horses and writes full-time, much to the delight of her fans.
