After witnessing a horrifying crime, Kaylee is forced to flee to a small Colorado mountain town and take on a new identity. There she becomes Grace, a dog kennel worker trying to avoid the dangerously attractive K-9 Officer Hugh Murdoch.

When an accident leaves Hugh and his K-9 partner, Lexi, on desk duty, both are anxious for Hugh to heal. Until then, the highlight of his day is teasing the beautiful but mysterious new kennel employee. Their simmering attraction fuels a passionate kiss—interrupted by a sniper’s bullet. With targets on both of their backs, Grace and Hugh will do whatever it takes to stay alive…not realizing the most dangerous threat of all is hiding right in front of their noses.

It was great to come back to the Rocky Mountain K9 Unit series.   I was happy to see Theo and Jules and Viggy and especially, the kids. I LOVE those kids. They add some humor and kick ass the way adults can only hope to manage. I listened to the first book Run to Ground.

On the Chase is Hugh’s story, along with Grace (Kaylee) who comes to town to hide. The beginning runs in the same time as book one, but then continues on past that ending.  Hugh is awesome and funny. He is a bit of a glutton for punishment with all his efforts.  He also seems like a big teddy bear – who wouldn’t feel safe and loved with him? Even with the various attempts on their lives, the love feels fast. I like the relationship and their honesty with each other.

The big interrogation at the beginning when Grace was new in town felt as off as it did when Jules was questioned. In small towns, you may have tons of quirky characters and someone may actually ask things but not usually. They are more likely to observe and take note of things. I enjoyed many of the town’s characters who added to the backdrop. But I didn’t like the peppering the newcomers with questions in either book.

This is mostly a fun, interesting and quick read. There is some violence and action which add suspense worrying over the possible happy ending. It’s all good. The next time out, in February 2018, is Otto’s story, Survive the Night.  I look forward to this since he is a quieter fellow than Hugh, so we don’t know him as much. Especially, I hope we spend more time with the kids.

About Katie Ruggle

A fan of the old adage “write what you know”, Katie Ruggle lived in an off-grid, solar- and wind-powered house in the Rocky Mountains until her family lured her back to Minnesota. When she’s not writing, Katie rides horses, shoots guns (not while riding, although that would be awesome), cross-country skis (badly) and travels to warm places where she can scuba dive. A graduate of the Police Academy, Katie received her ice-rescue certification and can attest that the reservoirs in the Colorado mountains really are that cold. A fan of anything that makes her feel like a bad-ass, she has trained in Krav Maga, boxing and gymnastics.
