When a knock on the door in the middle of the night wakes Sharon, she's wholly unprepared for the horrifying news: her father has been the victim of a vicious, racially-motivated attack.

A nationally recognized Shoshone artist, Elwood had been visiting Sharon for the holidays, browsing for gifts in San Francisco's exclusive Marina district when he was set upon by a mob of angry young men. Now he lies in a coma, hovering between life and death.

With little progress on the investigation from the overworked, short-handed police, Sharon resolves to track down Elwood's attackers herself. But when Sharon begins receiving hate-filled, racist threats from a shadowy group, it becomes clear that her pursuit of justice may be putting her own life in jeopardy...

The Sharon McCone series is a long running mystery series. I have read them all; The Color of Fear is number 32. It began in 1977. The books are set in current day so technology and other aspects have changed along with our world over the years. The mysteries are smart with many, well-defined characters. I loved seeing many of these familiar people from Sharon’s family, friends and co-workers. Their personal lives are a part of the story as well. There is also plenty of suspense.

The plot here is very timely with the current events. There are crimes which seem hate-related by a white supremacist group. But they might instead be criminals who were previously prosecuted or put on the run by the agency. Sharon and her team work to find the perpetrators even as more crimes are committed against her family and friends. This all happens the week of Christmas.

Elizabeth Evans does a splendid performance. I enjoyed her characterizations of the characters. She was a perfect Sharon for me, sounding the way I would expect. The male and female voices are both done well. It is a surprisingly short audio book at just under 6 hours.

The way Sharon and members of her team track down information and evidence to solve crimes has always been intelligent. There is also the normal element of danger here. Sharon pushed things a bit too far, which shocked me since she has had close calls before and she knows better. She has always been a kickass investigator. With a series of 32 books already, it is a surprise and pleasure to get more. I do hope Mick has a bigger role and finds happiness in a future book. He’s got a special place in my heart.

About Elizabeth Evans

Elizabeth Evans is a New York City based actor and voiceover artist, where she works in film, television and theatre while recording audiobooks, commercials and video games. She has recorded over 150 titles for Audible.com and other companies. She specialize in YA books with spunky female protagonists

Favorite recent work includes the film Beat-Up Little Seagull opposite Michelle Pfeiffer, the play The Christians at Playwrights Horizons and a hilariously heartbreaking commercial for Purina Cat Chow. Her audiobook work has been recognized by Audiofile Magazine, USA Today, Bloomberg TV and has received three “Best Of 2015” nods from Audible.com for previous recordings this year. Elizabeth is a recent graduate of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. When she isn’t acting or recording, she enjoys writing music and playing croquet. She’s also learning to cook, but is pretty terrible at it so far.

About Marcia Muller

A native of the Detroit area, Marcia Muller grew up in a house full of books and self-published three copies of her first novel at age twelve, a tale about her dog complete with primitive illustrations. The “reviews” were generally positive.

In the early 1970s, having moved to California, Muller found herself unemployable and began experimenting with mystery novels.

In the ensuing thirty-some years, Muller has authored over 35 novels–three of them in collaboration with husband Bill Pronzini–seven short-story collections, and numerous nonfiction articles. Together she and Pronzini have edited a dozen anthologies and a nonfiction book on the mystery genre. Muller received the Shamus Award, “The Eye” (Lifetime achievement award) in 1993. In 2005 Muller was named a Grand Master by Mystery Writers of America, the organization’s highest award. Pronzini was named Grand Master in 2008, making them the only living couple to share the award (the other being Margaret Millar and Ross Macdonald). The Mulzinis, as friends call them, live in Sonoma County, California, in yet another house full of books.
