Human laws do not apply in the territory controlled by the Others–vampires, shapeshifters, and paranormal beings even more deadly. And this is a fact that humans should never, ever forget . . .

After her divorce, Vicki DeVine took over a rustic resort near Lake Silence, in a human town that is not human controlled. Towns like Vicki’s have no distance from the Others, the dominant predators that rule most of the land and all of the water throughout the world. And when a place has no boundaries, you never really know what’s out there watching you.

Vicki was hoping to find a new career and a new life. But when her lodger, Aggie Crowe–one of the shapeshifting Others–discovers a dead body, Vicki finds trouble instead. The detectives want to pin the man’s death on her, despite the evidence that nothing human could have killed the victim. As Vicki and her friends search for answers, things get dangerous–and it’ll take everything they have to stay alive.

I completely love The Others series and this continuation has the same feels.  The world and some of its creatures are familiar. The sanguinati, shifters, elementals, and elders are all still around.  I would read the series from the beginning for the world-building plus it’s just a great story.

The main characters are new. I kept thinking Vicki would be a blood prophet or some other special type but she is human.  There are some new types of beings – the sproingers – which are fun and kind of creepy. I liked the connection of the Intuit – Julian and the new police guys – Grimshaw and Osgood.

I thought maybe at least a character or two would have been mentioned briefly in Marked in Flesh, since there was a huge dumping of them there, so I couldn’t remember them all. But no – none of them were there. I hope all those people show up in future books. I also really want to know how all the blood prophets are doing. Otherwise, why were they all mentioned? Even with only one book between, I had to name search on my Kindle to see if any characters were in both books.

As in the rest of the books, the Others protect and work with the “good” humans who follow the rules. The “bad” humans who are mean and greedy don’t do so well. The action was exciting. So Lake Silence was in the form as the rest of the books, and very enjoyable.  I can’t help but wonder if the next one will continue with this town or move on to another settlement. In any case, I’ll be reading or listening.

  1. I finished the rest of the books in the Others series so I’m excited to know that this one even thought it is new people has a few new others and continues on a completely different path that is just as good.

    • If you liked the rest of the Others series, you will probably enjoy this. I’m just so curious as to where it will go next. I didn’t specify very clearly but I did enjoy the audio. It was my first time to listen, rather than read. Alexandra Harris did a very fine performance.

    • I’m trying to decide which series I will start this year after COYER and my KU trial are over. If I hadn’t read this one, it would be at the top.

Nice review. I really enjoyed this, and I was skeptical. I liked that Vicki was just “plain human” as it added to the value of the story – seeing how the Others and Humans can get along after the events of the previous series.

Even though none of the original characters made a physical appearance, there was brief mention of a couple characters – both Vlad and the Intuit on Great Island (drawing a total blank right now, Joe?) – in passing. I’m actually kind of glad they aren’t part of the story. I enjoyed meeting so many new characters – I really hope the series follows the community and doesn’t bounce around to new characters each book. We’ll see.

    • I was happy to meet new characters (since they are developed) and learn more about the world. I did recognize a couple characters as you mentioned. I was just surprised to find the story wasn’t about someone introduced briefly in Marked in Flesh since it had an overwhelming dump of characters with little detail or development. Also, I would have liked more on the fate and progress of the blood prophets even as a side story. The blood prophets could be a main theme with a view to all the places they are. Anyway, I’ll be very curious to see where things go next.

Oh! I get you! I misunderstood. So yes, that would have seemed the natural progression, to follow someone from the original series. The points you bring up are precisely why I was a bit worried to read it… I’d grown to know and cherish the Lakeside residents. I was worried about leaving. But now that I’ve read it, I’m actually glad it was a fresh start. But that said, I hope this new series stays in Sproing, as I’m already invested in these new characters. ?

        • Well from Melanie’s post it soumds like she is going to some of those mentioned in passing in Marked in Flesh for the next one, Wild Country. I still hope we get cameos of Meg or Vicki as updates in the new books.

I was listening to FB live from one of the signings, she mentioned that the next book was going to be in a new location (which makes me sad. I was more time with Vicki). It is going to be called Wild Country and it will feature those from Marked in Flesh.

    • Oh fascinating. I may have to go listen to the fb live deal. I wondered why she didn’t start there but I did like this and hopefully we will learn more over time about Vicki and this town.
