From number one New York Times best-selling author Sandra Brown comes a heart-pounding story of survival, that takes the age-old question, "Does the end justify the means?" and turns it on its head.

Dr. Emory Charbonneau, a pediatrician and marathon runner, disappears on a mountain road in North Carolina. By the time her husband Jeff, miffed over a recent argument, reports her missing, the trail has grown cold. Literally. Fog and ice encapsulate the mountainous wilderness and paralyze the search for her.

While police suspect Jeff of "instant divorce," Emory, suffering from an unexplained head injury, regains consciousness and finds herself the captive of a man whose violent past is so dark that he won't even tell her his name. She's determined to escape him, and willing to take any risks necessary to survive.

Unexpectedly, however, the two have a dangerous encounter with people who adhere to a code of justice all their own. At the center of the dispute is a desperate young woman whom Emory can't turn her back on, even if it means breaking the law. Wrong becomes right at the hands of the man who strikes fear, but also sparks passion.

As her husband's deception is revealed, and the FBI closes in on her captor, Emory begins to wonder if the man with no name is, in fact, her rescuer from those who wish her dead - and from heartbreak.

Combining the nail-biting suspense and potent storytelling that has made Sandra Brown one of the world's best loved authors, Mean Streak is a wildly compelling novel about love, deceit, and the choices we must make in order to survive.

I discovered Mean Streak because it was an audible daily deal. I promptly went to Goodreads to see if I was interested. A romantic suspense tale which is set in North Carolina. I wanted it, so next to the library to see if I could get it there – yes- so I ordered it  I am in a mood these days wanting mystery, suspense, action and some romance and humor. That’s the mix I always prefer but don’t always get it. I’m especially focused on escaping into a new world where I can get lost in the mystery, feel love and laugh.

Jonathan Davis was a new to me narrator and I enjoyed this very much at 1.25 speed. I liked the voices and styles he gave the characters making them individuals and sharing their attitudes and feelings very well.

All the feels were available here. I love the way the characters were built with a range of good, bad and various feelings. I felt frightened, angry, upset, worried, lust and hope at times. I did root for the possible romance. The mystery was twisty and suspenseful. I didn’t figure things out until they unfolded.

There was one main concept of one character which makes the story work and is rather unbelievable. Communication failure causes SO much trouble! Even so, I loved this. It captivated my imagination and took my heart on a wild ride.  I’ll have to investigate if this author has more books in this genre. Highly recommended.

Giggle-worthy quote:

“What happened at the Floyd’s house? ”

“Norman and Will were on the lookout for me in front, forgot to cover their back. They’re mean but not too astute.”

“Lisa and Pauline?”

“Safe. I got there before the brothers carried out their wretched threat, which was probably an empty one. They wanted me, not Lisa. ”

“Are they in custody?”

“They probably are by now. The mountain is crawling with cops of all varieties. I left Norman and Will easy to find, chained to the tree where they used to keep the dog.”

“Poetic justice.”

“I thought so.” She touched the fresh bruises on his face. He gave her a wry smile. “They didn’t go for the idea at first.”

  1. I usually really enjoy her novels, they are great but it’s been a while since I haven’t read one and I think I should try this one too!

  2. This is something I picked up somewhere over the years. I have yet to read a Sandra Brown book but I have a few of them. But this looks like something I could enjoy.

    • I really enjoyed it. I’m going to get more from the library plus I just bought one in the audible 2-1 sale which wasn’t at the library.

    • I like the mystery and my heart seems to like the suspense. But it is creepy. I love romantic suspense, or even just mystery, thriller or suspense.
