A pirate doesn’t ask for permission - he takes.

When I see the delicate human female collared and enslaved by the smuggler I’m about to swindle, I do what any male would do.

I take her from him. It’s what I do best, after all.

Now Fran’s mine, and I’m never giving her up. On board my spaceship, she’ll be safe. She’ll wear my clothes, eat my food, and sleep in my bed. I’ll keep her safe from a galaxy that wishes her harm. But my sweet Fran wants nothing more than to return to Earth. How can I take her home when she holds my heart in her dainty, five-fingered hands?

The Corsair’s Captive  is the first book in the Corsairs series‏.  Of course, I must mention that while the heroine is human, the hero is an alien.  A big blue alien.  Obviously, this isn’t your average contemporary romance.  I’m not sure the best way to describe this genre, Sci-Fi Erotica?  Alien Romance?  Intergalactic Love Story?  All I know is I love it and Ruby Dixon is my favorite author in this genre.  I’m a huge fan of her Ice Planet Barbarians, and I applaud her imaginative way of expanding that world into new and uncharted territory.

The Corsair’s Captive is a sweet, funny romance that makes light of a dark situation; piratical dandy meets intrepid alien abductee.  I like how Ruby Dixon doesn’t take the easy route and make Kivian (the alien corsair) into a brutish, jerk.  Instead, he is thoughtful and clever, willing to give the rescued human, Fran, time to trust him and his crew.  I enjoyed Fran’s ability to make the best of any bad situation and her snarky comments.  The first line in Fran’s point of view, “You’ve never been groped until you’ve been tentacle groped,” had me cracking up.  I admire her ability to not be a weak and fearful human.

Narration:

This is the first time I’ve listened to an audiobook in this genre.  Overall, I though the narration was well done.  I especially enjoyed the satirical bent in Holly Jackson’s narration of Fran.  I thought  Mason Lloyd sounded a bit too human, but otherwise I liked his glib interpretation of Kivian.  I find it hard to understand made up names and words in brand new Science Fiction and Fantasy audiobooks.  While it doesn’t impact my review, I wish that this audiobook had come with a list of the character names and alien species to help clarify the narration.  I might be tempted to give the next audio book in the series a try, but I think I’d enjoy the written version just as much, if not more.

  1. I just tried the first Ice Planet Barbarian last month. It was fun. Look forward to progressing through the series. This one looks fun, too.

    LOL, on the quote.

It was short. I would recommend trying Ice Planet Barbarians first. If you prefer listening, the audio is slightly longer and a little cheaper.

  2. Nice review. I haven’t read any of the others books by Ruby Dixon except her Ice Planet Barbarians and I love that series, but I want to try her other books. ^_^ Someday!!
