The Quetico-Superior Wilderness: more than two million acres of forest, white-water rapids, and uncharted islands on the Canadian/American border. Somewhere in the heart of this unforgiving territory, a young woman named Shiloh -- a country-western singer at the height of her fame -- has disappeared.
Her father arrives in Aurora, Minnesota, to hire Cork O'Connor to find his daughter, and Cork joins a search party that includes an ex-con, two FBI agents, and a ten-year-old boy. Others are on her trail as well -- men hired not just to find her, but to kill her.

As the expedition ventures deeper into the wilderness, strangers descend on Aurora, threatening to spill blood on the town's snowy streets. Meanwhile, out on the Boundary Waters, winter falls hard. Cork's team of searchers loses contact with civilization, and like the brutal winds of a Minnesota blizzard, death -- violent and sudden -- stalks them.

A short review to update challenges

I loved this second book in the Cork O’Connor seriesBoundary Waters. I continue to the Minnesota setting, the Indian lore, the well developed world and characters.

Cork continues to grow and develop himself. I don’t know how he manages to take so much time to look into things though, since it doesn’t seem like he gets paid for it.

The plot here was also twisty. I especially enjoyed the young Native American boy who used his skills to help in the search and rescue. Cork, out in the wilderness, and his wife at home, both solve the crimes independent of each other, with the knowledge  they each gather.

I highly recommend this series if you like mysteries, law enforcement and Native American folklore.  I know I’ll be moving along to the Purgatory Ridge.

Narration:

I listened at my usual 1.25x speed with the comfort of the same narrator from Iron Lake.  The Minnesota locations and Indian words I knew were pronounced as I expected.  I continued to really enjoy both male and female voices and the performance adding to the emotional quality of the story.
