When former attorney and current dog whisperer Shane Kilcannon messes up his chance with a beautiful stranger whose confident smile and quick wit intrigue him more than any woman he's ever met, he’s ready to snarl like one of his beloved pit bulls. But Shane's work with the wildest and wariest of his family's rescue dogs has taught him patience and persistence. When his father hands him the opportunity to work alongside that very same woman who has come to town with groundbreaking tourism plans, he seizes it. He even offers to help her win over the locals, as long as she is willing to give a temporary home to one misunderstood dog…and spend plenty of time with Shane.

Chloe Somerset has built a reputation in the tourism industry as someone with big ideas that put little places on the map, and she’s certain she can do the same for Bitter Bark, North Carolina. All she has to do is convince one small town to change its name, open her clean-freak heart to a dog with a penchant for face-licking, and avoid the landmines of local politics when her plans divide the townspeople. But none of that is as scary as the feeling of falling hard for a sexy charmer who whispers all the right things and tempts Chloe to forget a lifetime of hard lessons. Shane might know exactly how to get through to the creatures who need care the most, but he's met his match with Chloe, and it'll take every trick he knows to teach her to fall in love.

A short review to update challenges

I wanted to read this Dogfather series from the moment I heard about it.   The combination of both small town and a big family made it warm and fun; the addition of animals was only a big plus.  The covers are shot with people who actually work at the Alcqua Animal Refuge in north Florida.  A portion of the sales of these books is donated to the refuge with over $5,000 donated so far.

The first book, Sit, Stay Beg is still available as a Kindle freebie.  I have bought some of the others and now they seem to be somewhat available at one of my libraries. I would read these in order since the close family dynamic means you will see previous couples in the next ones.

The blurb will give you the basics on Shane and Chloe.  They are smart, caring and compassionate people. Chloe comes up with a brilliant plan to market the town and makes some good friends including Shane. They are attracted and get to sexy times pretty quickly.  * Fans self*  They end up spending a lot of time together and develop more of a relationship.  Chloe doesn’t live here and Shane has never really wanted an actual relationship.  I enjoyed watching them work through the past issues to grow personally.  I’ll definitely continue to the next, Leader of the Pack.

  1. I’ve got the first book freebie and it is one of my planned reads. Glad the other books are strong entries in the series, too. 🙂

    • I really enjoy stories with an NC setting or a MN or IA setting because I know the areas so well. I’ve traveled enough there are other areas but since I’ve lived in these places it’s fun. I actually know NC the least so it helps me get more of a picture.

I love books where the pets play a role.

  2. As you might know I love reading books about dogs so this series might be one I like even though it’s a romance…lol. I do like reading about families and their lives and like a strong feeling of the place they live. Have you read the Deborah Knott Mystery series which is set in North Carolina, Anne? I haven’t read any for quite a long time and keep thinking I will get back into them. There are just too many books I want to read!

    • Yes! I love them. I’ve read them all plus her other series. I’m a big fan of Margaret Maron. I listened tgo one of the last 2 books in that series on audio and she – Margaret Maron was the narrator (the last 2 books in that series).

In one of the latest books, in the Sigrid Harald series she wrote a book (2017) I read last year when the previous “last” book was in 1995! So I listened to the audio – it was great.
