An unexpected phone call heralds a new challenge for Mercy. Her mate Adam’s ex-wife is in trouble, on the run from a stalker. Adam isn’t the kind of man to turn away a person in need—and Mercy knows it. But with Christy holed up in Adam’s house, Mercy can’t shake the feeling that something about the situation isn’t right.

Soon her suspicions are confirmed when she learns that Christy has the furthest thing from good intentions. She wants Adam back, and she’s willing to do whatever it takes to get him, including turning Adam’s pack against Mercy.

Mercy isn’t about to step down without a fight, but there’s a more dangerous threat circling. Christy’s stalker is more than a bad man—in fact, he may not be human at all. As the bodies start piling up, Mercy must put her personal troubles aside to face a creature with the power to tear her whole world apart.

While this review will be spoiler-free for Night Broken, the 8th book in the Mercy Thompson series there will be some minor series spoilers.

Patricia Briggs does an amazing job writing Urban Fantasy with a heroine who’s strong and loyal to a fault and the Mercy Thompson series is a great example of that writing ability.

Mercy, a coyote walker (shapeshifter) has lived among werewolves most of her life. Even though she is not as physically strong as the werewolf pack she is now a part of,  she is possibly the strongest member the Columbia Basin pack has. And she has the patience of a saint which is tested to the point of breaking when her mate/husband, Adam’s ex-wife calls for help.

There were times I felt like Adam needed to put that troublemaking witch, Christy in her place! If I was Mercy, he would be sleeping in the “dog” house. But I can see why he didn’t. Because of pack politics, Mercy needed to be the one to do it. And Mercy, the trickster she can be, got her revenge in the end. One that would make Bran laugh in remembrance of a young Mercy and her time with his pack.

In fact, Briggs does a great job of foreshadowing when Mercy and Adam take a trip down memory lane about one of the tricks Mercy played on Bran’s witch of a mate. I love how an author will throw us bread crumbs that add up to a pay off by the end of the book and Night Broken is laced with a few of them. One had a very gross-out factor for me but I can’t go into it without bordering on a spoiler.

Many of the series characters make an appearance; werewolves, vampires and fae along with a new character, Gary Laughingdog. He brought some humor to some scenes and I would like to see more of him and Coyote interact. Also the big bad is one nasty mo-fo and just when Mercy thought she’s seen all that the supe world had to offer, she gets a volcano god thrown at her.

Now that I’ve read the latest on Mercy and Adam, I am “chomping at the bit” to get a new Alpha & Omega book about Charles and Anna. I love Briggs’ world she has created and both series should be on every Urban Fantasy reader’s shelf.

About Jennifer at That’s What I’m Talking About

Some of you may know her as The Book Nympho. She blogged for about 5 years on her own blog, but after experiencing writing burn out due to finishing up her BA in English, she took a year off from writing reviews.

Things about Jennifer that are not reading related, she’s learning to crochet. She’s been married 16 years, and she has a 13-year-old son. Once a dog person, she now find herself very much a cat person.

She loves rejecting reality one book at a time, and she’s happy to be back in the blog world through the team of That’s What I’m Talking About.

Jennifer reads all things romance and urban fantasy, and over the last two years, she’s branched out to some young adult. She reviews both audiobooks and traditional/ebooks.

About Patricia Briggs

Patricia Briggs was born in Butte, Montana to a children’s librarian who passed on to her kids a love of reading and books. Patricia grew up reading fairy tales and books about horses, and later developed an interest in folklore and history. When she decided to write a book of her own, a fantasy book seemed a natural choice. Patricia graduated from Montana State University with degrees in history and German and she worked for a while as a substitute teacher. Currently, she lives in Montana with her children and six horses and writes full-time, much to the delight of her fans.

    • You do. This is one of my top 5. I do a Read-along every year. I alternate between a series I love reread and something new to me. This year is a reread. I have focused only on UF but am debating that with myself. But I want to have people participate and be able to get some fun prizes.

  1. Great review, Jennifer! I loved seeing Gary Laughingdog introduced in this one and I was burning for a good Christy comeuppance so Mercy’s solution cracked me up.

In the last release, I kept seeing names like Zach and Joel and couldn’t remember when they entered the series cast so I was glad to have my poor memory reminded with our reread. Wulf is so squicky. LOL Stefan makes me swoon. And, I need my Warren and Kyle fix each book.

  2. Jen

Hey look, it’s Jennifer!! Nice review! I mostly forget what happened in this one, but overall I love this series and the narrator. Is this the one where they end up gaining a new “pack member” because of the volcano god?

  3. Ugh, I’m so behind on the readalong (again)! I got up to book four then covid hit and I haven’t got back on it. 🙁
I will though! I’ll have this series read this year… 🙂
