Over twenty years ago, the heiress Patricia Lockwood was abducted during a robbery of her family's estate, then locked inside an isolated cabin for months. Patricia escaped, but so did her captors - and the items stolen from her family were never recovered.

Until now. On the Upper West Side, a recluse is found murdered in his penthouse apartment, alongside two objects of note: a stolen Vermeer painting and a leather suitcase bearing the initials WHL3. For the first time in years, the authorities have a lead - not only on Patricia's kidnapping, but also on another FBI cold case - with the suitcase and painting both pointing them toward one man.

Windsor Horne Lockwood III - or Win, as his few friends call him - doesn't know how his suitcase and his family's stolen painting ended up with a dead man. But his interest is piqued, especially when the FBI tells him that the man who kidnapped his cousin was also behind an act of domestic terrorism - and that the conspirators may still be at large. The two cases have baffled the FBI for decades, but Win has three things the FBI doesn't: a personal connection to the case; an ungodly fortune; and his own unique brand of justice.

I was excited to have a new series, Windsor Horne Lockwood III  about Win.   I really enjoy this author and everything he writes.  I’ve always been curious and favorable to Win because he was devoted to Myron.  He has some strange ways of living and choices.  However, he has money which allows him a LOT more choice than most people.

Win is set in current timeframe, following the Myron Bolitar series, which I have read in its entirety.  I think you could read this without having read that series but you would miss a great deal of character development and history about Win.

A current murder sends Win looking into his families connections and events from fifteen years ago.  Win is very smart and has people to research the things he wants to know. He is invited into the case unofficially by his old FBI handler when there is a connection to his family.

Win has some other things happening as well.  He does his vigilante work tracking down a scumbag who is hurting women.  There are some difficulties afterward.  He spends some time and gets some investigative deduction help from his daughter Ema.

In his research, Win learns much more about his family, their history and several events.  He has choices to make about truth, protecting his family and their name, and seeing justice.   Win handles it all brilliantly.

Narration:

I believe this is my first listen to Steven Weber although I thought I had heard him before. I do own other Harlan Coben audiobooks where he is the narrator.  I was very comfortable with his performance and the voices seemed right for the characters. The emotional tones were fitting.  I listened at my usual 1.5x speed.

I liked this one as well and also listened. I was really missing the Myron dynamic between the two which I’ve always loved. I really wanted Myron to at least make an appearance but I know it is Win’s turn. Glad you loved it!

    • I’ve loved many, many of his books so I’d recommend trying another. Recently he has done some standalones also but I love the Myron series. It’s how I started reading him.
