When fifteen-year-old Oscar Dreyer-Hoff disappears, the police assume he’s simply a runaway—a typically overlooked middle child doing what teenagers do all around the world. But his frantic family is certain that something terrible has happened. After all, what runaway would leave behind a note that reads:

He looked around and saw the knife that had stabbed Basil Hallward. He had cleaned it many times, till there was no stain left upon it. It was bright and glistened. As it had killed the painter, so it would kill the painter’s work, and all that that meant. It would kill the past, and when that was dead, he would be free.

It’s not much to go on but it’s all that detectives Jeppe Kørner and Anette Werner have. And with every passing hour, as the odds of finding a missing person grow dimmer, it will have to be enough.

I’m enjoying this Korner and Werner series set in Copenhagen, Denmark.  I enjoy getting the feel of a different place.  The books apparently are being published out of order in the English translations.  Goodreads and Audible have different numbers for the same books.  I’ve tried to read in order.

Jeppe Korner is the lead of the team, along with Anette Werner.  They don’t usually partner together exactly as they often team with lesser experienced officers.  When they do go together, you know something exciting is going to happen.   Anette especially seems to go off on her own more.

The main case is a missing boy, but then his teacher is murdered.  There are a lot of layers of information in these complex cases with many people.  The cases are all different types and that continues.  With all the characters, I found it a bit confusing at times.   It all comes together though.

Both Jeppe and Anette have personal issues. Anette is back from maternity leave. She’s looking good, and gets attracted to another man.  Jeppe is still seeing a co-worker but isn’t sure how to handle being with her children.

The cases include a lot with a suicide attempt, runaway teens, murders, falsifying information to the government, a pedophile ring, an art theft ring, and blackmail.  There is plenty to keep the team busy!

Narration:

The same narrator has been with the entire series, making it easy to connect with the consistent characters.  I felt comfortable with the different voices and they were distinct and seemed appropriate for age and sex.   I was able to listen at my normal 1.5x speed.
