When Reggie Johnson answers a job ad in the paper, she's astonished to find that she's not applying to work at her favorite card game, Spellcraft: The Magicking. Instead, she's applying to be an actual familiar for an actual witch. As in, real magic.

The new job has a few perks - great room and board, excellent pay, and she's apprenticing to a powerful witch. Sure, the witch is a bit eccentric. And sure, there was that issue with the black cat Reggie would prefer to forget about. The biggest problem, however, is warlock Ben Magnus, her employer's nephew and the most arrogant, insufferable, maddening man to ever cast a spell.

Reggie absolutely hates him. He's handsome, but he's also bossy and irritating and orders her around. Ben's butt might look great in a crystal ball vision, but that's as far as it goes. But when someone with a vendetta targets the household, she finds herself working with Ben to break a deadly curse. Apparently, when they're not fighting like cats and dogs, things get downright...bewitching.

Go Hex Yourself  is a paranormal romance, set in current times, but most people know nothing about magic. Witches are nearly immortal and live thousands of years.  Regina (Reggie) is a normal human who doesn’t know about magic and ends up in a job with Aunt Dru who is a 2,000 year old witch.  Her nephew, Ben is a 500 year old warlock.  The chapters alternate between Reggie and Ben’s point of view.

Reggie is always in debt and has never had anyone to trust except her roommate, Nick.  Her parents have always been a mess, asking her for money, or just taking credit cards out in her name to buy things they want.  Somehow Reggie has a kind and positive attitude.  She’s had primarily low-level jobs and a string of bad luck.

Ben had parents who never wanted a child and just ignored him growing up.  He became a familiar for his Aunt Dru and she has tried to help him.  He’s been a loner, and as a warlock done some iffy things.

The story here is very eccentric, and we learn about magic as Reggie does.  At first she doesn’t believe, but she works hard to stay in the job because she needs the money.  She adjusts to doing pretty well with her work, but then some things happen which require her to quit or work with Ben.

Ben and Reggie are actually well suited and very attracted to each other.  Neither has had anyone to trust or a real relationship so they fumble a bit.  I enjoyed seeing them work together. Once they move into sexy times, it’s with gusto.

Overall,  I enjoyed the couple and the mystery.  The overall story setup and the magic world happenings are quite over the top.  I didn’t really enjoy Aunt Dru.   Ben and Reggie were people I liked and they had many common experiences.  It was charming to see them build trust with each other.  Go Hex Yourself is sometimes fun but very quirky.

About Jessica Clare

This is a pen name for Jill Myles.

Jill Myles has been an incurable romantic since childhood. She reads all the ‘naughty parts’ of books first, looks for a dirty joke in just about everything, and thinks to this day that the Little House on the Prairie books should have been steamier.

After devouring hundreds of paperback romances, mythology books, and archaeological tomes, she decided to write a few books of her own – stories with a wild adventure, sharp banter, and lots of super-sexy situations. She prefers her heroes alpha and half-dressed, her heroines witty, and she loves nothing more than watching them overcome adversity to fall into bed together.

  1. Jen

I just finished this one earlier today and really liked it. I loved the quirky humor and silliness a lot. I did figure it all out right from the get-go, but I still loved watching Reggie and Ben fall in love as they figured it all out.

  2. This one grabbed me by the cover and the title, but again it’s not my type of read. I’ll keep it on my TBR for now, but won’t seek it out unless I actually have a lot of time without other books I want or need to read. Thanks for the review! I also am still just loving your new header and thinking of ways to redo mine for like a spring/summer look! lol
