Ivan thought the world was through giving him second chances. Who'd want a rough ex-con with a savior complex and a bad habit of bringing home helpless strays? Everyone in Blackwood, Virginia, knew he wasn't good enough for the fine things in life; they knew he was too damaged to save. He just needed to keep his head down, work himself to the bone, and pretend he was content with the lot he was given. Until she came into his life. Until she changed everything. Until he realized he would do anything, fight anyone, tear the world apart if it meant saving her.
Jennifer loved this so I had to try it when I got the opportunity to review the audio book version. Under Her Skin is suspenseful. I worried about what would happen to Uma and then Ivan. I knew Joey would turn up eventually. I was horrified and angry at what happened to Uma. But it could so easily happen when one is young and learning your way in life. The choices these three characters have made in their lives make them who they are and are a not so subtle reminder.
The romance happens very quickly considering the situation but the emotional upheaval in romantic suspense often is a catalyst for relationship development. Life is short. Uma is so brave and takes steps to become the person she wants to be. I’m so proud of her. Ivan has also built a life, but doesn’t believe in himself. Other people do and they work on convincing him.
Wendy Tremont King is new to me, as many narrators are. I am just learning audio books. She brought an authentic emotional quality to the story. She allowed me to believe. The characters had distinct voices which fit well. I enjoyed the pace and timing. She was easy to understand and let me get lost in the story.
I’d give a giggle worthy quote but it would be a spoiler. I’ll just say Ms. Lloyd’s name made me giggle and her story made me want to cry. Uma, Ivan, Ms. Lloyd all living lives with actions learned from the past.
I am so lucky to be able to go on with the Blank Canvas series with the audio for By Her Touch with an audio review soon.
