Sunday Post – 9 January 2022 @kimbacaffeinate @readingreality

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly  @ Caffeinated Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news~ A post to recap the past week, and showcase books and things we have received.

Don’t forget to look at my giveaways on the right sidebar.

Sunday was the final warm day but it was rainy.  I did get out to walk Lulu between showers.  We need the rain.  I did my visiting and thought more about goals and what I want to do over the next year.  I’m enjoying my start on the Read-along.  I had forgotten too much and love the banter between Cat & Bones.

Monday,  I still say we need the rain but I’m not a fan of the 30 degree temperature drop accompanied by 20mph winds.  It wouldn’t be too bad without those strong winds. I went right for the alpaca socks.   Holy crap!  I got approved for an ARC by Avon – that never happens.  I wrote some reviews and creating shells for posts which we have ARCs.

Tuesday, I woke at a regular time but fell back asleep for a couple hours. I am finally relaxing a bit.  I could easily jump into crafting projects or cleaning but I’m just taking a bit of a break.  The temperature is still in the 40s but  with sun and without the brutal wind today. Lulu and I managed a short walk.  I noticed several things blooming including my Egao Corkscrew Camelia plant  and my Hellebore Lenten Rose. The broccoli is coming along well now.  The lettuce is about finished though.  It looks like I didn’t finish updating my garden book once I planted the front planter so I need to do it. Today I wore my handknit wool socks.  The first pair I ever made.

Wednesday, I worked on more computer posts.  The weather was a bit warmer but I still wore my heavier jacket.  I was a little warm after the walk with Lulu.  I got more post shells setup plus a couple Series on Saturday posts.

Thursday, I am just dragging this week, sort of doodling along.  I don’t seem to be too excited about any new project right now.  We got a farm box today. I quickly went over to the college to pickup my daughter’s books for her classes which start tomorrow.  She is taking  Fit & Well for Life and World Civilizations II.  Then we had massage/chiro appts in our N95 masks.

Friday started out with a bang. The wind is gusting and temperatures around 40F (5C), closer to freezing with the wind chill. I’m back in alpaca socks and Cuddle Duds layers. My mom called me, knew who I was,  told me my brother had Covid.  I’m not surprised as he was running all over in Colorado over the holidays without a mask.  My niece moved there last fall so they went there for Christmas.  He does wear masks in planes and such but otherwise he’s kind of laisse-faire and promotes too much of the GOP bullying.  But he’s not completely stupid, just years of indoctrination as a privileged white guy. My daughter has her gastroenterologist specialist appt which we can only get about every 3 months.  If we could solve or at least mitigate this issue, she’d have a lot less anxiety. I had to start a new audio and ebook today which I don’t always like doing on the same day.  But I finished the ebook and only have a short bit yet on the audio. So I’ll end up starting 2 new ones tomorrow too, since I just didn’t feel sleepy.

Saturday, what a difference the wind makes.  The temperature is right at 40F (5C) but sunny and low wind so it feels good.    Then it was nice enough to take Lulu for a walk.  I started on computer work. I finished up my audiobook.  I made an early dinner and then wrote some reviews.  In the pictures below, Lulu was sleeping so well and was like – Why are you waking me up?  I can relate.  I’ve been lackadaisical all week.

Stacking the Shelves is hosted by  Reading Reality.  These are the exciting ARCs I received this week (If you click on the cover, it will take you to the Goodreads entry):

I sincerely want to thank Avon,  Stephanie Burgis, Kensington, Berkley Romance,  AceRoc, and  Tantor Audio.

(If you click on the cover, it will take you to the Goodreads entry)

I got my Amazon First Reads for free through Prime.

Now the really scary one. This is all the Kindle and Audible freebies I grabbed this past week. You can see why I need to do Thrifty Thursday to be sure I read a few at least one each month.

I really meant to cut back on freebies BUT  they are free so I guess that won’t be happening.

I’m not including things like reviews posted or upcoming as they are always in the right sidebar. And, my challenge status is also there.

  1. Oh my gosh *lol* I love the picture where Lulu seems to laugh at the camera (the one with the blue thing in the right corner of the pic). She is such a cutie! And your socks. I envy you for them *smile* Ah well …Covid. I am sorry to hear that your brother got tested positive. I know what you mean with your words about him. We love our siblings but sometimes … *smile* Hope everything goes well with your daughter and her medical appointment. My best wishes to you all and stay safe and well.

    • Thank Vi. The blue thing in the Lulu photo is my daughter’s socked foot. Lulu is our best girl. Thankfully I have made several pairs of sock over the years because they feel good on colder days.

  2. Lulu is so cute in these pics!! Sorry your brother is sick, but I’m glad you had a nice conversation with your mom. Have a great week!

  3. Jen

I am sooooo excited that there is another Other’s book! I am holding off for the audio for it and for Dev’s upcoming title. March is going to be a busy one for new titles!

My week was good, getting back into the swing of things. We did have a snow day on Friday (6″) so the kids were home. It’s going to rain today, so my husband and I got out early this morning and took our new snowshoes for a spin at a trail along the water. It’s yucky now, so I’m going to read some after I finish blog visits! Hope you have a good week ahead.

    • Thank you Jen! I’m glad you were able to get out before the yucky. That’s sort of my plan today. We’re going to walk before the rain later. It’s windy but from the south so it’s warmer today. I have always read the Others, probably because I started them before I was an audio listener. Shocking.

  4. Your garden is coming along nicely! I planted broccoli and it seems to be doing well. My camellia bush is doing really well! I can’t wait until I get blooms. I cut them and have them float inside. So pretty.

Yay for an Avon approval, they are tough. I need to request Crowbones. Maybe later this week.

    • Thanks Rachel. My camellia and azalea and gardenia bushes are new and small but they are growing so I have high hopes for this next year. Also the peonies and lilacs I planted. I think I’ll harvest more lettuce today before the next cold snap. Plus the snow peas that are ready.

  5. It was so cold here this week. I think it was 9 degrees when we walked the dogs one evening. Yes, we are those people who walk our dogs daily no matter what. It is kind of miserable. I am glad that you were able to have a nice conversation with your mom but sorry to hear that your brother has Covid. I just requested the new Kerrelyn Sparks book. I somehow missed that one! I hope that you have a great week!

    • Thank you Carole. Lulu won’t go out if it’s raining, which I wouldn’t mind. I try to go in the mid afternoon during the warmest part of the day this time of year. I’ll have to adjust that come July and August. I don’t like to go when it’s too windy.

  6. Glad you were able to have a less hectic week. Hope your brother feels better. LOL, and Avon shot me down for Emma Project (I’m used to them saying no, too), but I did get Crowbones approval so that is a good trade off.

    Have a good week, Anne!

  7. You got some good books this week! We had the really cold temps here too. Supposed to be warm again, into the 40s this week, so warmer than this past week. I’ve actually been cold in my house, which normally I’m hot all the time. Looks like Lulu did some snuggling in blankets too! Hope you have a nice week!

    • Lulu is always a blanket hog. It’s been up and down here between the upper 30s to mid 50s for a high, which is a bit cooler than normal. Today will get to 60 before the rain so I’m going to take advantage of that.

  8. A 30 degree temp drop and rain? Sounds like my ind of weather. 🙂 Cold/rainy/dreary just makes me happy inside and out. Strange, I know. I’m glad you had a good call with your mom, but sorry to hear your brother has Covid. I hope his symptoms are mild. I listened to Super Hot Wingman this week and it was a lot of fun. And how exciting that your got Crowbones! I’m so excited for that one.

    • I had an amazing ARC haul this week. I am even a bit ahead on my January reading which I really really am liking. So far my brother seems to be ok. He is at lease vaxxed and boosted.

  9. The winds really don’t help with the chill in the air, do they? I hope you are staying warm. I was glad to read the winds had lightened up some. I am sure Lulu enjoys her walks. 🙂 I am really looking forward to The Emma Project and Crowbones. So much reading goodness ahead of us! I hope you have a great week, Anne!

  10. Yay for garden goodness. 🙂 I’m sorry though to hear about your brother and Covid. I hope his case is mild.

Some weeks are just like that! 🙂

I hope your new week ahead is full of good things, and take care!

  11. I had kind of a lazy week last week too, mainly because we had 14″ of snow and couldn’t get outside to do much of anything. It sure made for a good reason to cozy up by the fire with some good books though. I’m so sorry to hear about your brother and COVID. Hopefully it will be a mild case and he’ll be more careful moving forward. Hope you have a wonderful week!

  12. We had crazy winds here in Charleston Monday night too. We had quite a bumpy ride, trying to sleep in our RV while it was getting blown around. Luckily, we never leave our awning or our screen tent out so we didn’t have to worry about anything like that. We saw them blown down all over the campground the next morning though.

I’ve only read a couple of books by Stephanie Burgis but I liked them. I really like the cover of Good Neighbors. I’ll have to look for it.

I hope your brother feels better soon.

    Enjoy your week!

    • Thank you Shelleyrae. I love my handknit socks. I just started reading Sonali Dev in 2021 even though I have wanted to since I met her in 2016. The Emma Project is the 4th in the series. The books are about one couple so I think you could read it without having read the others but I like the full history so I’m too OCD to do that.

  13. The cold is no fun and the sun/wind make such a huge difference. I’ve also been bundling up in my warm fuzzy socks and coats (though we’re nowhere near as cold, but also it’s Dallas so we’re not supposed to be lol). I’m sorry to hear your brother caught COVID, though like you said, it doesn’t seem shocking given his behavior. I just hope it’s not a serious case, for your family’s sake. Glad you were able to have a nice call with your mom!

I’m really glad to be rereading NH, I also had forgotten too much! Looking forward to our chat this weekend 🙂 Have a great week!

  14. I like the word “lackadaisical,” Anne! That was me last week, too! I love Lenten Roses and really need to get some for my borders. I love seeing the broccoli growing. I haven’t grown it for a long time, but it’s so good fresh from the garden.

You got some great looking books, Anne. I especially look forward to getting to read Crowbones when it comes out.

I hope you have a great reading week and feel less lackadaisical! (Actually, I think you got lots done last week.) I’m going to work on my week to get more done.

  15. Your new books look great. I finally bought myself the first book in the Other series by Anne Bishop. I’ve been wanting to read that series for ages.
Ow.. I definitely need one of those socks.
Have a great week and happy reading.

  16. Brrr… I know what you mean about a bitterly cold wind! It makes SUCH a difference – and as we live close to the coast, we are subject to a lot of wind. Love the socks – they look so warm and cosy. I hope the weather is friendlier in the coming week, Anne. And many thanks for swinging by:)).

    • Thank you Sarah. I think of you all week. I hope you are doing better. I remember how supportive you were at the beginning of last year when I was so immobile. I still don’t know why that happened, I’m just glad to be better. I wondered at times if I would ever be myself again. I would say I am close now but I still do PT every single day. Today is 40F (5C) but the wind is low enough and there is sun so I think we will walk.

  17. I’m sorry to hear about your brother. I hope he will be OK.

Love your socks! So warm and cozy, and the colors are great. There’s nothing like handknit wool socks for warmth. I’ve been wearing mine almost nonstop since we got home. Good thing I like knitting socks, so I have plenty of pairs available.

I would wish you warmer weather, but I’d really prefer it cold, both because I like snow, and because the world is getting warmer at an alarming rate already. But I will wish you warmth — warm home, warm clothing, warmth from friends and loved ones — and hope that will sustain you until the spring. As for Lulu, she’s got the right idea for cold weather: snuggle up and snooze. 🙂

I noticed you reviewed Lightning in a Mirror, but I can’t read your review until I’ve written mine! I’ll be back in a few days to check it out.

    • Thank you Kara. Yes you can never have enough handknit socks and I have plenty of sock yarn and haven’t been knitting much in the 2 years we have been here as too much house stuff. I might be in good shape to do more this year finally! Really it is not cold here, a much narrower range of temperature than Minnesota. I only have trouble when it is very windy. Lulu is always ready to go except when it is raining. But she has nice jackets and coats and sweaters, of course.

    • One day Lulu and I will have to come visit you. Or I’ll have to run up on the Harley as that would be a short jaunt. Lulu would not like the Harley, too big and noisy for her. Anne Bishop has more than one series. This is part of the Others series which begins with Written in Red. I love the series very much but it is very different.
