This is a new feature I developed where each month we will look at our favorite – the best – series in a genre or topic.
The topic here, by my definition, is a series with main characters who are amateur detectives set in historical England. These are the ones which came to mind. I enjoyed some more than others. The team had to help me find some of these.
Since I haven’t read everything, it’s a subset of the possibilities. I’m sure I am forgetting some great authors. There are also plenty of authors I have yet to read. Please share your favorites with me in the comments, also.
My favorite Historical Bristish amateur detectives series are (in no particular order):
Wrexford & Sloane Sebastian St. Cyr Miss Marple, Hercule Poirot
by Andrea Penrose by CS Harris by Agatha Christie
Christmas Kat Halloway mysteries Lady Sherlock
by Anne Perry by Jennifer Ashley by Sherry Thomas

Sebastian St. Cyr tops my list! Love Dame Christie, too, along with Sherlock Holmes.
Yes I enjoy them all!
I’ve always meant to try Sherry Thomas, one of these days!
Hers are excellent!
Agatha Raisin popped into my mind first.
Oops, missed the word “historical”. Scratch Agatha.
I’ve read and enjoyed her but yes, not historical.
I’m going to redeem myself, The Brother Cadfael series. Must be 30 years since I read one. Also loved the PBS series with Derek Jacobi.
OK I know that one but sadly, I didn’t enjoy them.
Definitely a series pick that is near and dear to my heart.
I’ve only recently become such a fan of this genre but I tried it a bit a long time ago but never gave in to it until the past few years. Now it’s definitely a favorite genre.
Love the Sebastian St. Cyr series!
It’s a true favorite of mine.
Veronica Speedwell is at the top of my list! It’s soooo good, and it was my first in the genre. I also love Lady Sherlock and Kat Holloway. I’ve always wanted to try St. Cyr. I do enjoy this genre and would love to get more of it!
You definitely should try Sebastian St. Cyr it’s a real favorite but not as much romance as the others. I may have a mistaken idea about Veronica Speedwell – I thought it was more fantasy
Definitely a mistaken idea! There is no fantasy in Veronica at all. It’s all historical and she’s a forward thinking woman. It. Is. So. Good.
Can’t wait to get to it. I’ve always seen great reviews for it too.
