When human bones are found beneath an old chapel in the woods, evidence suggests the remains could be linked to the decades-old case of missing teen Annalise Jansen. Homicide detective Jane Munro—pregnant and acutely attuned to the preciousness of life—hopes the grim discovery will finally bring closure to the girl’s family. But for a group of Annalise’s old friends, once dubbed the Shoreview Six by the media, it threatens to expose a terrible pledge made on an autumn night forty-seven years ago. The friends are now highly respected, affluent members of their communities, and none of them ever expected the dark chapter in their past to resurface.
But as Jane and forensic anthropologist Dr. Ella Quinn peel back the layers of secrets, the group begins to fracture. Will one cave? Will they turn on each other? The investigation takes a sharp turn when Jane discovers a second body—that of the boy long blamed for Annalise’s disappearance. As the bones tell their story, the group learns just how far each will go to guard their own truth.
There are many characters and all of them are worried about themselves; things they have done in the past. When a body is found underneath a remote chapel, everything starts getting examined to the unhappiness of many people.
Jane is excited to have a cold case with some real evidence and something important to do aside from her own difficulties. Her fiancé is missing and she is six months pregnant. She is smart and an excellent investigator. She is dogged by unscrupulous reporters. However she perseveres. It is wonderful for her to have the job to do and do well.
The six friends who know parts of the night have gone on with their lives and careers for 47 years. They have lied and covered the truths they knew for all that time. While Annalise was dead. Now with bodies found, there will be closure for the families but nothing is what they thought.
I loved the tension of the characters who felt they might get caught. I enjoyed the triumph of Jane pursuing the evidence and steady progress. There were plenty of twists I didn’t expect. I also wonder if we will have more stories of Jane and her future.
Narration:
There were many characters with their point of views mostly in their heads. Jane and her team had the most dialogue, and in their interviews. The voices all felt right with emotional tones. I listened comfortably at my usual 1.5x speed.

I couldn’t believe all the lies, but I was glad to see Jane untangle them.
yes I really liked Jane. In spite of her personal situation, she was very smart and skilled, doing a fantastic job.
This seems like it could be a series, hopefully the author will write more stories. I love the set up of a pregnant detective and a missing fiancé 😁
I REALLY hope this will be a series but I don’t know.
I’m looking forward to starting this soon. Like that you’d be okay revisiting Jane in a future book.
I hope you love it. I did, although some of the characters are not nice people. I loved Jane.
I enjoy Loreth’s mysteries so I really want to read/listen to this one!
I’ve really enjoyed all her books I’ve read.
I can’t wait to read this one! I really like Loreth Anne White’s books. 😀
Me too! I jumped in right after I got it. It’s in KU with audio also if you have that.
I’ve been wanting to try this author’s books and have been eyeing this one. You have me convinced that I need to give it a try. 🙂
I’ve been grabbing all her books since Jonetta had me try one. I really hope this one becomes a series.
Sounds like there were a lot of characters to follow, but that the author did all of that well, because you liked it! Great review! The cover on this is eye catching too!
I REALLY enjoy this author. I hope this one continues as a series because the core characters (not the culprits in the case) are compelling.
