In a 1950’s English country village on a crumbling family estate lives a brilliant chemist and amateur-turned professional sleuth (this is her own opinion of the matter) and her quirky relations. Flavia de Luce cannot go long without stumbling over a body and does so in this twelfth installment to the series. Alan Bradley’s Flavia […]
I was so excited to get a new book Where Bones Sleep about Jane Munro! These stories as well as The Black Orchid are based on true stories that happened. Jane is close to having her baby now, and still worried about what happened to her fiancé. But a cold case begins when a body […]
After their previous murder mystery in the American West, Stella and Lyndy have returned home to the New Forest of England to peace and quiet, helping in their charities and local affairs and, as far as the countess is concerned, working on giving her a grandchild and heir. No time for hot air balloon races […]
I always try to read everything by Loreth Anne White. She has a talent with mystery and twists. The style of The Black Orchid felt very different from most of her work. The beginning had alternating scenes from different people going on a cruise ship. The book is set up like a podcast and I […]
The Law Student is a very short story about the turning point in a college football player’s life and how he decides to pursue the law. There’s an old-fashioned, rural feel to it. Decades later, another young woman finds the ghostly shadowy presence of past evil keeping her palpable company in her new house. Jaime Jo Wright’s Inspirational Gothic Suspense has fast become some of my most highly […]
I haven’t always been sure that shorter stories could develop the characters and plot well enough to make a good story. But lately I have seen some talented authors making it work well enough. I might like more character growth but it’s a good story and may be will be the start to something new. […]
I needed to figure out a way to start reading series where I am not current or the series is finished but haven’t read them yet. So it’s a way to commit myself to read my backlist, particularly series. Another police procedural series is the Rizzoli & Isles I want to read. I […]
I have really enjoyed reading all the Jack Reacher series, including novellas. Jack Reacher started out wandering when he was maybe mid-thirties, and as the books went along he aged. Then, the books seemed to go back in time and cover times when he was in the military or freshly a civilian. I would […]
