Gary Karkofsky AKA Merciless: The Supervillain without Mercy

TM has managed to fall into a comfortable routine as the (acting) Supreme Archmage of Earth. More hero than villain these days, he’s recruited to a shadowy black ops team with a shocking mission: assassinate Helios: The Sun King, ruler of Tomorrow Island. Gary immediately twigs to the fact he’s the fall guy even as he has his own score to settle with Helios. Joining him will be a number of fan favorite characters as well as several new additions to the surreal world of the Supervillainy Saga.

The Return of Supervillainy is the tenth volume of the Supervillainy Saga, following the world’s worst (best?) supervillain. It has two bonus stories in “Sidekick Girl versus Merciless” and “The Freelancer’s Cunning Plan.” It also contains “The Guide to the Supervillainy Saga” which will detail the entire history of the setting for long-term and new fans.

I’m a huge fan of the Supervillainy Saga. C.T. Phipps delivers another wild, hilarious, and fast-paced story packed with snark, heart, and more pop-culture references than you can count. Gary Karkofsky AKA The Supervillain without Mercy™, once again finds himself caught between being a hero and a villain, this time taking on the role of acting Supreme Archmage of Earth while being recruited for a dangerous mission to assassinate the Sun King of Tomorrow Island.

Of course, in true Gary fashion, nothing goes as planned. What follows is a chaotic mix of multiverse mayhem, shifting alliances, and razor-sharp humor. Ten books in, this series still manages to feel fresh and fun, and I love how Phipps balances the absurdity of comic-book chaos with real emotional beats and moments of character growth. It’s a wild ride that never takes itself too seriously, yet still manages to deliver satisfying storytelling beneath all the laughs.

This is a series that I recommend you start with book one, The Rules of Supervillainy. But then, I’m always a fan of starting with book one. And the entire series is a lot of fun, so you’ll miss out if you don’t start at the beginning. If you’re looking for a smart, funny, over-the-top superhero romp, The Return of Supervillainy is a fantastic escape from reality.

Narration:

Jeffrey Kafer‘s narration is once again a perfect fit for this world, his comedic timing and distinct voices capture the energy and tone perfectly. I always enjoy his audiobook performances. He is the voice of Gary Karkofsky in my head.

I’m Melanie, and I like to live vicariously through fictional characters. I enjoy reading and listening to mostly fictional books in the paranormal genre, including Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance and Horror. I will read contemporary romance on occasion, but not often. I started listening to audiobooks when a new book in a series was coming out and I wanted to get a refresher, but didn’t have time to read all the books (I think it was Anita Blake). I fell in love. I stayed with strictly re-reading books that I’d already read for a long time. I eventually tried an audiobook for something that I hadn’t read first and was hooked there too. Now, I listen to audio for both re-reads and first time. I have some series that I’ve given up reading and only listen. I try to get any many books/audiobooks from the library to help save on my budget. Books on CD and the newer digital downloads from the library really allow me to listen more. I then purchase my favorites (because who can wait in line for your favorite book??) and less mainstream books from Audible or some other online retailer.
