Mercedes Thompson, aka Mercy, is a talented Volkswagen mechanic living in the Tri-Cities area of Washington. She also happens to be a walker, a magical being with the power to shift into a coyote at will. Mercy's next-door neighbor is a werewolf. Her former boss is a gremlin. And she's fixing a bus for a vampire. This is the world of Mercy Thompson, one that looks a lot like ours but is populated by those things that go bump in the night. And Mercy's connection to those things is about to get her into some serious hot water...
I first read the Mercy Thompson series in 2012 and was hooked, binging on all the books then available (books 1-6) in paperback from the library. I have since purchased them all as ebooks. I am excited to be able to read them all through continuously now to keep all the story arcs fresh in my head.
Moon Called is an excellent first book with comfortable world-building and engaging characters. It is action-packed and held my interest from the beginning.
Mercy is an awesome character. We get the story from her point of view. She is strong and very knowledgeable about werewolves and fae. She even has contacts with the vampires. Like every great urban fantasy heroine (or hero), she has friends in many odd quarters and seems to build the oddest alliances. I love how she is sassy with the werewolves. I was afraid for her with the vampires, all of them.
We got more details about Adam than I remembered and I liked him better. I enjoyed seeing her early relationships with members of his pack, also. I was totally icked out by Sam, though. It was fascinating to see Mercy interact with Bran, Leah, Charlies and others in Montana. There were various things about her history which I had forgotten. I had forgotten how many others like witches and fae are also here in the beginning.
I really LOVED this so much and was happy to have more to read and I am thrilled to have this opportunity to read the series again with you all.
Questions / observations from Moon Called:
I alternate years between series I have read and series which are brand new to me. This year is the re-read of a much loved series. I would love to include the Alpha & Omega books but didn’t feel I could have us read 18+ books for this Read-along.
So I can’t easily give “fresh” observations or questions knowing already what happens in the next 10 books. So I am going to ask you to participate and put your questions or observations into the rafflecopter to be shared, especially if it is a new series to you, or is further along in the series than you have read.
Some of my friends may be able to contribute with their review, if they are new readers to the series.
Games:
Who said (enter the answer in the Rafflecopter, don’t put in the comments)
“You got the address from the vampires?”
There are other options in the rafflecopter for you to enter discussion questions and quotes to share.
Schedule:
We are doing one book every 4 weeks, posting on Fridays.

Grand Prize Giveaway:
I am still developing the complete grand prize package which I will update here as we go along in the Read-along. I know it will contain the MP3 audio versions of the books from Brilliance Audio, probably signed as I intend to go see Patricia Briggs at a conference or two this year. It will also contain swag from those events.

Oh, this brings back incredibly fond memories, Anne? It was my very first urban fantasy book…ever. I’m looking forward to continuing the series (I paused at River Marked). Wonderful review!
I’m so excited reading them again. I read this series, Kate Daniels, Sookie Stackhouse and Cat & Bones, all at the beginning of my UF discovery too. I read them all in paperback from the library. I also stopped at River Marked because that was all that was released at the time. How things have changed but I own them all in ebook now.
I’ll be counting on you to help me with observations and questions for all the later books then please?
Count on it!
I registered to book one and it was my first audio of the year. I loved it all over again. I started the series long before the blog, so I wrote a review for book one and plan to write for the others that I never did reviews on. Your review was wonderful! Thank’s for this read-along. Mercy Rocks!!!
Some of my favorite quotes from Moon Called:
– “MS. THOMPSON, it said in heavy block letters, PLEASE KEEP YOUR FELINE OFF MY PROPERTY. IF I SEE IT AGAIN, I WILL EAT IT.”
– “Mine,” he said.
Adam’s eyes narrowed. “I don’t think so. She is mine.”
It would have been flattering, I thought, except that at least one of them was talking about dinner and I wasn’t certain about the other.”
– “Love thy enemies, it says in the scriptures. My foster mother always added, “At the very least, you will be polite to them.”
– “Mercy,” he mumbled. “What the hell did you do to my French Roast?”
So quoteable! Those are great, Angel. 🙂
Thank’s!! ?
That’s great Angela! I’m so glad you are joining and I appreciate the quotes. I asked for them in the rafflecopter but it is really better for discussion here. You picked some awesome ones!
Well I’m not doing the giveaway since I own all of Mercy in every formate and most of Briggs titles, but here ppl can see the quotes and discuss. ^_^
This was not quite my very first urban fantasy, but nearly so. I spotted Moon Called on a pretty display at Border’s for its release day and it went home with me along with the book I came to buy. 🙂
I didn’t do my re-listen for this month, but I re-listened just last year so its fairly fresh in my mind. Such a great debut and I do love the way Patricia Briggs made her various characters personable, but also truly dangerous, wild beings who aren’t human. Mercy really was the common denominator for all of them. Mercy is one of the best heroines I’ve read for all around character and action blended together. 🙂
Yes I had forgotten how many key figures were in this first book. That surprised me the most. Seeing them in hindsight was something. But the greatest in UF always know “people” in all kinds of odd places. They are also smart and compassionate and they listen to their own moral compass.
First time I’m hearing about this one, I like all things vampire. Really nice book.
It’s an amazing series. You should give it a try.
I’ve been reading them as they come out. I probably won’t read along, but maybe I’ll catch one here and there.
I’ve been reading them as they come out for about 8 years but felt it was finally time to read them all together. I hope you can join us for some.
This is one of my all-time favorite series. I’ll definitely be re-reading along.
Same! I’m so happy you will be with us.
I have the first couple of books in the series and plan to start it in the new year. Such great covers!
Amazing covers! I’m so glad you will be joining us! I hope you will give us some observations / questions as a new reader please? Let me know if you’d be interested in reviewing River Marked as it’s the only one not taken. but see how you like the series first. It’s one of my absolute favorites.
I’m so here for this series. I read it about 5 years ago and I’m not up to date so this will be a great way to refresh and move on with the group.
LOL…I’m already behind but I’ll catch up to next months post.
I feel exactly the same. It’s been about 8 years since I started so I’m thrilled to read the early books again. I own them all on ebook, but may listen to some for the re-read from the library. It’s a bit iffy because the same narrator does Charley Davidson and sometimes I can’t do that.
Ooooh! This series is on my list of series to read this year. I think I own the first 6 or 7 so I’ll join along in the readathon. 🙂 I have until the end of the month to read book one?
Actually we just finished book 1 and now we are reading book 2 by Jan 31. But we will be reading only 1 book every 4 weeks afterward. I see somehow I didn’t get the Miss a Post on this one I’ll have to update this post.
Anyway, I am so excited to have you join us! I hope you will share your observations and questions since the series is new to you!
I love this series so much! I think that I liked this book more when I read it the second time after I already knew how some things ended up. Great review!
Thank you! It’s hard to write a meaningful, non spoiler review when you have read 11 books further in the series. I wish we had been able to join up with your year of re-reading.
I’m always in awe of Mercy’s strategic thinking and her ability to make friends with all the supernaturals! I love this series and hope to catch up with the re-read! Fab review! 🙂
