A blow to the head with a block of amethyst has left multibillionaire Nathan Barrister dead—while nearby, a vault, its door ajar, sits filled with priceless paintings, jewelry, and other treasures. Lieutenant Eve Dallas’s husband, Roarke—who misspent his youth in Ireland as a scrappy thief—recognizes at least two stolen pieces among the hoard. The crime scene suggests a burglar caught in the act. But only one item seems to be missing.
Then it’s revealed that the vault had actually belonged to the victim’s late father—and no one in the household knew it was there until a recent remodeling project exposed it. To protect the family name and business, they explain to Eve, they’d been looking for a way to return the ill-gotten gains anonymously and avoid the police. But now the police are all over their elegant house, and have a bigger, bloodier mystery to solve.
By all accounts, Nathan Barrister was a good man, a generous employer, a devoted husband and father. As for his father—he clearly had secrets. Now it’s up to Eve and her team to find out if those secrets got Nathan killed—and if it was a crime of passion or revenge.
I love the In Death series. I am always so happy to have a new book in this series. The characters have become beloved to me, and their circle of friends with comfortable connections. The smart way the police work the cases and try to get a vision of what happened and what makes sense is always exciting. In addition to the case, I enjoy the personal growth of the characters. There’s nothing realistic about the stories but the characters’ emotions.
Stolen in Death is the 62nd in the series. I have read every one. They are a comfort and joy for me. Every new one is a gift.
Eve and some of their friends are at a charity event. We get Eve’s discomfort with the social events even though some close friends are attending. She has a wide circle with Mavis and Crack to Nadine and Mira. Finally home to relax and she is called out to a murder.
A wealthy business owner, Nathan, has been killed in a vault in his home. It looks like he disturbed an intruder. The vault is full of priceless stolen items but one is missing. He wasn’t feeling well so when his wife went to check on him she found him dead. The family apparently didn’t know about this vault until a few months ago after his father died.
Nathan and his wife were happy and loved each other. He was running the family business, along with his sister. The wife and his two daughters are devastated. Someone had to know about the vault to plan this robbery. So either it is family or staff, or someone they told. Nathan, after discovering the vault, was trying to return the items to the original owners quietly.
I wasn’t sure how Eve and her team would figure it out. But Eve, with the help of the expert consultant, is expert at digging into all the odd details to develop information. They looked at financials to see if anyone in the house paid to have him killed. The three staff are all long term and fond of the family. They researched the brokers and thieves skilled enough to commit such a heist. The e-geeks were busy trying to find an auction or sale of the priceless jewelry stolen. They also looked into the father, Henry, before he died as to his health and any of his women he might have told. All four ex-wives were contacted.
It was exciting as they pulled the pieces together and found evidence. When they were able to pinpoint the auction, a raid was planned for the takedown! As usual, Eve is expert at handling interviews and getting unintended confessions. Each story is a delightful blend of intriguing mystery, found family and smart investigation. I’m already looking forward to Fury in Death this September.

It just blows my mind that after this many releases, her books are still strong storytelling. Another series, I have to work through.
I love it so much. These are so worth it. I love the characters, the relationships and the smart investigations and the humor and compassion.
Were you as astounded at who showed up in this story??? I dropped everything. Great review, Anne💜
yes but I thought it was best to not spoil that stunner.
Same here! So glad no one spoiled it for me.
62 books?!! This is a long running series! I read the first few and then never continued. Glad to see you keep enjoying every new release!
They are such amazing reads. I really love them.
I really want to try this series, but with that many books… Maybe someday.
Your best bet is to read one a month or so over years, something to get started. They are so awesome I binged once I started though. I read the paperbacks and then moved to ebooks. I’ve only read the audio once. The narrator is a great narrator but she’s VI Warshawski in my head and sounds too old for Eve. So I read the ebooks. I think the libraries have them all.
62??? That feels overwhelming to start. lol
But they are SO good. I love them.
Fantastic review Anne.
Thank you Kimberly. I really love them.
My stepmom loves this series, so I’m sure she’s reading it, and hopefully enjoying it like you did. I do like the cover on this one. Great review!
Thanks Lisa. It’s an amazing series with great characters, plots and world building. I love it.
I am a bit behind in this series, not too much, and I have every intention of catching up. Waiting for the audio book to become available at the library.
I love this series. I always read them.
