There are only three real powers in the universe: the corporate power of the Trust versus the Union's labor's leverage. And between them, the Guild tries to keep everyone's hands above the table. It ain't easy.

Branded a Guild deserter, Jal "accidentally" lands a ride on a Guild ship. Helmed by an AI, with a ship's engineer/medic who doesn't see much of a difference between the two jobs, and a "don't make me shoot you" XO, the Guild crew of the Ambit is a little . . . different.

They're also in over their heads. Responding to a distress call from an abandoned planet, they find a mass grave, and a live programmer who knows how it happened. The Trust has plans. This isn't the first dead planet, and it's not going to be the last.

I share an eLlibrary account with my adult daughter, and periodically, books I’ve never heard of end up on my borrowed shelf.  Intrigued by the cover and in the mood for a sci-fi, space adventure, I began reading Cascade Failure, the first book in the Ambit’s Run series by L.M. Sagas.  It only took a chapter for me to be captivated by the characters and I was 100% invested in where the story was going.

In a distant future of space-jumps and terra-forming, humanity is now spread across a universe known as The Spiral.  The Spiral is dominated by the hyper-corporate Trust, the labor-focused Union, and the Guild, a neutral force attempting to keep the peace.  Greed and exploitation run rampant, and the crew of The Ambit, a scrappy, independent transport ship, is unexpectedly drawn into a corruption scandal that could rock society and destroy the tenuous balance of the three factions.  When The Ambit responds to a mysterious distress call and discovers a completely dead planet, the crew finds themselves harboring a lone programmer and holding the key to a massive corporate conspiracy capable of collapsing planetary atmospheres

What makes Cascade Failure shine so brightly is its focus on character dynamics.  The Ambit is helmed by Eoan, a sentient AI captain with a keen eye for human behavior.  The small crew includes Saint, a battle-scarred ex-soldier serving as the ship’s XO, and Nash, an enhanced, engineer/medic who treats mechanical and human repairs with the same no-nonsense attitude.  Tensions skyrocket when the crew is joined by Jal (pronounced Hall), a genetically enhanced miner on the run after being branded a Guild deserter, who also happens to share a messy history with Saint.  The dialogue is packed with a sharp, snarky sense of humor that keeps the pacing brisk and engaging.  I enjoyed how the narrative shifts perspectives frequently, giving real-time insight to the emotions and motivations of each character.

Although the overarching threat involves corporate corruption and massive planetary stakes, L.M. Sagas keeps the narrative anchored in the small, intimate moments shared by the crew.  Friction between Saint and Jal provides excellent dramatic tension.  Both are brooding, deeply hurt individuals struggling with past betrayals.  Watching them navigate their shared trauma while trying to save the galaxy is incredibly satisfying.

Most intriguing of all is Eoan, who stands out as one of the most refreshing AI characters I’ve read, feeling like a true, vital member of this chaotic space family.  I felt like Eoan’s journey of understanding human nature vis-à-vis the crew and their adventures mirrored my own journey as the reader trying to decode the characters and their motivations.

I liked the author’s character-focused writing style and their ability to thoroughly describe the settings without bogging down the narrative.  The political landscape between the Trust, Union, and Guild could benefit from a bit more world-building definition, but that might be to indulge my own desire to know this universe better.  I appreciate that the author didn’t rush to wrap up the story after the climax, and gave the appropriate amount of page time needed to resolve the independent character arcs.

Cascade Failure was an unexpected blast of a sci-fi adventure providing action with deeply felt human connection.  It delivers fantastic fight scenes, great emotional resonance, and a found-family crew you will immediately want to follow into the next book.

Narration:

Despite the number of primary characters and shifting narratives that would make Cascade Failure a challenge to narrate, Torian Brackett did an excellent job.  I found it easy to distinguish between the voices of each character.  Some of the artistic choices for accents were a little over-the-top, but I don’t think this detracted from the overall performance.  I listened at 1.25x and I feel that any faster might make it harder to follow some of the dialogue.
