This review is for the first two books in the Men of Mercy series by Lindsay Cross. I confused this with another author with the last name Cross. My bad and if I wasn’t try to review it for you all, these would likely be a DNF.  I sadly recommend them to no one.

There are some reasons for this. The characters, which are of the utmost importance to me, were flat. It felt like they had one thought, one emotion, and no complexity. They were cliche; the plot was also sort of ridiculous. The bad people are really evil, no redeeming qualities at all.  The good guys have guilt over things which aren’t their fault and they finally see the light. UGH.

Both books had essentially the same plot / troupe. Each book features one of two brothers. They are military special forces from a smallish town in Mississippi. Their team comes back to the small town to investigate some terrorist type stuff. In Redemption River, Hunter James reconnects with his high school sweetheart and she is always on his mind. In Resurrection River, Ranger James claims his high school sweetheart as his own. For military special forces, they don’t seem too bright, too well trained or especially well prepared or with decent intel. The action does not seem well described or believable.

The dialogue between characters, including the sex scenes, doesn’t seem very realistic either. The couples didn’t really give me the feels. Since they already had a past relationship, they jumped into the new one right away with no development. So with no information on the history or connection, it feels like insta-love. I hoped for some bromance or at least a better working relationship between the guys on the team. Yes, some details are different in each book. Although the woman in each book gets the crap beaten out of her by the bad guys.

The characters and story line here didn’t work for me. There was too much coincidence., not enough connection between characters to build their relationships, and so not enough feels. Maybe it’s the world-building aspects of the first book in a series and I’ll fare better with the next book.

Resurrection River did not improve the series for me. I wished I could just stop reading. In fact, it took almost a week since I kept reading something else. It may be different for you, but it did not work for me.
