Alone in the Northwoods, Norry Last settles in for another springtime lull at the remote resort she inherited from her father. She’s content with the solitude, maybe resigned. But when a blizzard hits, those little cabins by the lake start to fill up fast.
First to arrive is Lizzie, an eight-year-old with resilience and wisdom beyond her years, neglected by a mother struggling with addiction. Next comes Wendell, a cantankerous old fellow whose house collapses in the storm, the same way hope collapsed inside him long before. And then there’s Bud, the helpful handyman who’s always buzzing around, his kindness thawing something Norry thought she’d buried deep in the Minnesota snow.
As white melts to green, the Last Resort’s unlikely companions learn to share space, stories, and quiet comforts—an unexpected family that makes perfect sense. After all, Lizzie needs to be cared for. Wendell needs to care. Norry needs to open up. And Bud? Bud just might fix everything.
I really loved Loon Point! It is set in Minnesota which is a plus for me. It’s a character story. First is Norry Last who runs The Last Resort, with its cabins on the lake. She is strong and independent and kind. Bud is on the local fire department, but used to be a police deputy. Lizzie is an 8 year old girl who lives with her single mother in a rotting trailer. Wendell is a 72 year old man who feels disappointed with life where he never felt appreciated, living in his late mother’s house.
Everything starts with a blizzard. Norry is baking cookies. There are no guests in the winter. Bud is out with the fire dept as Wendell’s roof is collapsing under the snow. Lizzie is out walking thru the blizzard to The Last Resort because the heat has gone out at the trailer. Norry takes Lizzie in, gets her bathed, fed and dressed in clean clothes. She keeps leaving messages for Lizzie’s wayward mother. The next morning Bud brings Wendell over and Norry puts him up in a small cabin to figure out what is next for him.
Norry and Bud make quite a team with caring for others to give them shelter and kindness while they put their lives back together. Over the rest of winter and spring, this becomes quite the found family. Wendell gets a fresh start on things. Lizzie is in and out as her mother struggles to make a stable life. I was really touched by all their compassion and resilience.
Narration:
The narrators are all new to me. I thought they did a nice job giving us our three primary points of view: Norry, Lizzie and Wendell. I was very comfortable with her voices and the differences for the age and gender felt comfortable. I listened at my normal 1.5x speed.

Excellent review, Anne💜 I was hoping you’d love this.
Thank you! I did love it. It’s also the sense of community and people doing what they can in the face of adversity.
This sounds so good!
I highly recommend it Naida. It’s such a sense of personal growth and community.
This sounds like something I’d really enjoy! Poor Lizzie!
I just loved this with its cozy feel. But yes Lizzie is in a horrible situation for an 8 year old. I just hurt for her.
Minnesota!! Love it!
