How does one kill the unkillable? Sparrow and her companions have been left with an impossible slay the immortal Deathless King, whose magic siphons the very life of the world to sustain himself.

The answer may lie deep in the past, when those who would become Deathless Kings stormed the sanctuary of the goddess of Fate, in an attempt to remove their threads from the Weave and become immortal. They broke off a piece of the goddess’s loom and hurled it to the earth, where it still lies at the center of a dangerous wasteland called the World Scar.

For any chance against the Deathless King, Sparrow and her companions must brave the World Scar and reach the loom, which would grant the power of a goddess. But the journey is fraught with danger, and the powerful Deathless King determined to find them.

And if the loom is reached – what will the power of a goddess do to a mere mortal? Sparrow has no choice but to find out.

In a world where everyone’s fate is woven into a magic tapestry some believe your entire life is already determined and there is nothing you can do about it.  Others believe you have to change your profession every year to keep fate guessing.  Others still believe that they need to chase after all their dreams and throw caution to the wind because they want to meet their fate head on.  But what about the Fateless? The girl who doesn’t have a thread in the weave?  She stands outside of Fate’s plan and can cause chaos and sometimes, she can change someone’s fate completely.

Deathless is the second book in the Fateless series.  Sparrow knows what a fateless is now but has no idea how she is going to use that to kill the Deathless King brought to life in the city she fled.  She has picked up some companions in her journey to meet with a Queen who should be able to help her on the journey to find a way to do this impossible task.  But the Queen is not what she thinks and it leads to more questions and some feelings  of betrayal.

Deathless is a solid follow up to Fateless.  If you like all the romantic longing that seems to come along with young adult then there are going to be plenty of moments for you in this story.  My issue, and it is a me thing, is I generally do not enjoy books where the characters spend a lot of time traveling.  I tend to get a little bored with the story.  That said there are some very cool places our intrepid cast ended up.  I especially liked the new addition to the crew found in the middle of a desert.

Halek the fate chaser is still probably my favorite character as I really enjoy his entire outlook on life.  He is the friend that will follow you into the fire, telling jokes and laughing the entire time.  Meeka, our new addition was too cute and I liked the story of how their race came into being.  Kysa is a great warrior and riding huge beetles is very cool but other than that I don’t remember a lot that she added to the story.  Raithe, the love interest and bodyguard is very much a master of patience and it is hard not to like him because he is practically perfect.  While I don’t love the age difference between Raithe and Sparrow it does fit the common fae/human tropes so I try not to linger too hard on it.

There are quite a few battles and some very tense moments along with a cliff hanger of an ending.  I will say I probably enjoyed this slightly more than the first book and I am eagar to see how Sparrow will finally meet the Deathless king.  If you read the first story and enjoyed it I think Deathless should be another win for you.

So shall we go see if we can’t defy fate tonight

Mia Hutchinson-Shaw continues the series well.  I struggled a little telling Sparrow and Raithe apart a few times but overall all the other voices are distinct. I did enjoy Halek’s voice choices the most as the fate chaser seems to get some of the greatest lines and fun moments.  Meeka and the other Jurakoo of the desert were fun to see how Mia chose to voice and perform them.  She made me care about that little not a mouse so much. Overall a good performance that I was able to listen to at my usual 1.5x speed.
