High in the Swiss Alps, accessible only by a single, winding railway, stands the luxurious Grand Alpine Hotel. With glorious mountain views and exclusive access to powdery slopes, it draws guests from far and wide.

The notorious actress.
The high-flying politician.
The society wife.
The reckless friend.
The shrewd doctor.

But not everyone is here for a winter holiday.

Beneath the champagne and furs, dark histories simmer; old grudges emerge like cracks in the ice.

And someone is watching from the shadows. A polite, unassuming woman with an extraordinary mind: Miss Marple.

When a body is found and a blizzard cuts off all escape, only Miss Marple can connect the clues before the killer strikes again. Because it isn’t a question of who has a motive, but who’s next…

I’ve always enjoyed Agatha Christie and Miss Marple is a favorite. There was an book a couple years ago with a whole batch of new Miss Marple mysteries by a number of mystery writers, including Lucy Foley, which I really enjoyed. So I was delighted to have a new one.

Murder at the Grand Alpine Hotel is set after World War II.  Miss Marple travels there with Dolly Bantry and her companion, Diana.  There are a number of colorful characters and odd events.  The hotel has recently reopened.  There is skiing, spa services, and other planned snow contests and events.

We get the point of view of several of the characters but not Miss Marple. We only “hear” her through her speaking to others. The points of view are all the villains, suspects and hunters of them.

Apparently there were killings up on the mountain during the war and some prizes stored. Those knowing want the treasure or to take down the wartime killers. Bodies start dropping as the treasure has been located. Next there is a train accident and everyone is trapped there during a snowstorm until the police can arrive. There’s a politician, his wife and his mistress, a doctor, some nuns, in addition to Miss Marple and her friends, and various other characters. No one is exactly who they seem to be.

I look forward to more of these New Miss Marple Mysteries as she is a character of lifelong experience I admire.  It’s intriguing to see the characters and their moralities and motivations displayed.

Narration:

There were five narrators, handling  different points of view, which was very enjoyable.  Mostly we got the stream of thought from the different characters and the voices became comfortable. I don’t know which narrator voiced which character.  What was odd for me was the scenes having actual dialogue. Specifically the voice of Miss Marple seemed too low pitched to me.  The accents used sounded appropriate but it was not highly accented.  I was able to listen at my usual 1.5x speed.

About Lucy Foley

I live in London, but love traveling – both in real life and on the page (hence the appearance of some far flung locations in my writing).

My debut novel, The Book of Lost & Found, published in early 2015.
