I needed to figure out a way to start reading series where I am not current or the series is finished but haven’t read them yet.  So it’s a way to commit myself to read my backlist, particularly series.

Another police procedural series is the Rizzoli & Isles I want to read. I have watched a few of the tv series but it is very different.

I have a secret.
And someone wants to make sure I never tell . . .

In a house decorated with horror movie posters, a young woman's body is found. She lies on her bed, two bloodied objects clutched in her palm. Detective Jane Rizzoli and Forensic Pathologist Maura Isles are called to the murder scene, but even faced with this gruesome sight they are unable to identify the immediate cause of death.

Their investigation leads them to a high-profile murder case that was seemingly solved years before. But when another body is found in horrific circumstances, the link between the two victims is clear. Was the wrong person sent to prison? Is the real killer out there right now, picking off new targets?

One woman knows the killer is coming for her next. She's the only one who can help Rizzoli and Isles catch him.

But she has a secret that she has to keep . . .

I Know A Secret is Maura dealing with her mother trying to manipulate her as much as she can.  Her mother is dying but still getting in her head. People are dying in horrific ways and Jane is having trouble making a connection.   Maura gets an idea that it has a religious framework and she’s right.  Jane and Frost also find a woman who comes to the first two funerals.

There is another point of view of a woman who has a job promoting authors who don’t appreciate her efforts.  She doesn’t enjoy it.  She also has some strange relationships.  We don’t know who she is until near the end.

After a couple victims they finally connect the victims but the crime was years ago.  So why are the victims being murdered now?

I enjoyed this one for its pace and struggle to connect the victims.  I felt bad for the innocent suspects. It felt like guilty until proven innocent.

There’s developments on the personal front for Maura and for Jane’s mother.

Mothers know best . . . But who will listen?

Boston homicide detective Jane Rizzoli and medical examiner Maura Isles are plagued by what seems like a completely senseless murder. Sofia Suarez, a widow and nurse who was universally liked by all her neighbors, lies bludgeoned to death in her own home. But anything can happen behind closed doors, and Sofia seemed to have plenty of secrets in her last days, making covert phone calls to old contacts and traceless burner phones. When Jane finally makes a connection between Sofia and the victim of a hit-and-run months earlier, the case only grows more blurry. What exactly was Sofia involved in? One thing is clear: The killer will do anything it takes to keep their secret safe.

Meanwhile, Angela Rizzoli hasn’t had a decent night’s sleep in all the years since her daughter became a homicide detective. Maybe the apple didn’t fall too far from the tree. Nothing in her neighborhood gets by Angela - not the gossip about a runaway teenager down the block and definitely not the strange neighbors who have just moved in across the street. Angela’s sure there’s no such thing as coincidence in her sleepy suburb. If only Jane would listen; instead she writes off Angela’s concerns as the result of an overactive imagination. But Angela’s convinced there’s a real wolf in her vicinity, and her cries might now fall on deaf ears.

With so much happening on the Sofia case, Jane and Maura already struggle to see the forest for the trees, but will they lose sight of something sinister happening much closer to home?

Sadly I am at the end of the series.  Listen to Me was a great conclusion focusing on parents and children. A surprise is that it is not Jane and Maura telling the story, although they do each have a point of view.  It felt like the largest point of view was Angela, Jane’s mother.

A nurse is surprised in her home and murdered. A doctor in her unit, his wife and daughter are all concerned.  When they look into the nurse’s recent history they find many calls to Maine where she worked 15 years ago.   The small town there had a murder of a female college professor who was mid divorce with her husband, and it was assumed he did it.  But their 3 year old daughter went missing.

Meanwhile, Vince is out of town and Angela spends her time on the happenings in the neighborhood.  A teen girl didn’t come home and her parents are worried.   A couple moves in and is very weird.  The unload the truck during the night, and put bars on their windows. and the man is wearing a gun.   She gives us a colorful picture of the neighbors she has known for years but how well does she know them.

I really enjoyed this clever mystery, the quirky neighbors and especially, getting Angela’s point of view.

Narration:

The later part of the series is narrated by Tanya Eby from Ice Cold forward.  I was very comfortable with her voices for the characters which doesn’t always happen when there are changes.   I was able to listen at my newer 1.75x speed.

About Tanya Eby

Tanya is a starving artist without the starving part. Maybe, then, she’s a snacking artist. She lives in Grand Rapids, Michigan with her two kids and tiki-obssessed husband and writes quirky fiction.

After writing a gripping, dark, gothic novel IN THE GARDEN ROOM, Tanya decided to switch it up. She’s hard at work on a romcom, which doesn’t feel like work at all.

She likes to keep things interesting.

She is also an award-winning narrator and audiobook publisher. She has been lucky to narrate some of the best books around…600 and counting! Many of the books she narrates are NY Times bestsellers.

She loves the challenge of narrating and truly adores words. Reading other writers’ work encourages her to keep working on her own.

About Tess Gerritsen

Internationally bestselling author Tess Gerritsen took an unusual route to a writing career. A graduate of Stanford University, Tess went on to medical school at the University of California, San Francisco, where she was awarded her M.D.

While on maternity leave from her work as a physician, she began to write fiction and in 1987, her first novel, Call After Midnight, was published. It was just the first of 31 suspense novels that she’s written over a 36-year writing career.  She also wrote a screenplay, “Adrift,” which aired as a 1993 CBS Movie of the Week starring Kate Jackson.

Tess’s first medical thriller, Harvest, was released in hardcover in 1996, and it marked her debut on the New York Times bestseller list. Her novels have hit bestseller lists ever since.  Among her titles are Gravity, The Surgeon, Vanish, The Bone Garden, and The Spy Coast. Her books have been translated into 40 languages, and more than 40 million copies have been sold around the world.

She has won both the Nero Wolfe Award (for Vanish) and the Rita Award (for The Surgeon). Critics around the world have praised her novels as “Pulse-pounding fun” (Philadelphia Inquirer), “Scary and brilliant” (Toronto Globe and Mail), and “Polished, riveting prose” (Chicago Tribune). Publishers Weekly has dubbed her the “medical suspense queen” and Time Magazine named her novel The Surgeon one of the best mystery/thriller novels ever written.

Her series of novels featuring homicide detective Jane Rizzoli and medical examiner Maura Isles inspired the hit TNT television series “Rizzoli & Isles,” starring Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander.

She is also a filmmaker.  She and her son Josh produced a feature-length documentary, “Magnificent Beast,” about the ancient origins of the pig taboo. It aired on PBS channels around the country. Their previous film, “Island Zero”, was a feature-length horror movie that was released in 2018.

She lives in Maine.

  1. Your Sunday Series sounds like a great idea. I’m glad it helped you get through this series and that you enjoyed them all (and the new narrator in the later books). I also hope she writes more for you, too.
