Captain Tess Bailey and her crew of Robin Hood-like thieves are desperate and on the run. Pursued by a vicious military general who wants them dead or alive, Tess has to decide if she can trust Shade Ganavan, a tall, dark and arrogant stranger with ambiguous motivations.
Shade Ganavan had oodles of arrogance, oodles of charm, and oodles of something that made me want to kick him in the nuts.
What Tess and Shade don’t know about each other might get them killed…unless they can set aside their differences and learn to trust each other—while ignoring their off-the-charts chemistry.
I didn’t expect space opera, but I couldn’t be more pleased. For those who are more focused on romance, there’s the start of one here. Nightchaser is an unexpected pleasure. Of course, it’s the characters which make it great. There is definitely the urban fantasy feel of a longer story arc with a crew of quirky, beloved friends who are like a family.
Tess is young and does have some flaws. She hasn’t had an easy life and it isn’t easy now. She learns more about her own history and I suspect there’s plenty more to learn. Her heart is in the right place and she easily puts others before herself. I had worries about Tess being overconfident and too trusting, ie TSTL. Luckily, she has that crew to support her when problems arise. Shade has been drifting since his parents died and now he is intrigued. I rather like him. The man has some talents.
There is a lot of action and politics; this is only the beginning of the Endeavor series. I need to know lots more about the world and these characters. I liked the amount of information and details though, enough without being overwhelming. I am definitely looking forward to more; it’s exciting!

Thanks for the review. I’m kind of kicking myself that I didn’t pick it up for review, but I’m trying REALLY HARD to limit new series and authors for right now and focusing on some other books and backlog. This sounds good… Maybe they’ll release it in audiobook and I’ll catch it then!
That sounds like a plan. I do rally well with Netgalley but I have had to develop a better system for my audiobooks since I went a little overboard when I didn’t expect publishers to be so great to me. I requested a bit more since I wasn’t sure I could get things. Now I know I can get some things, I’m not as worried. Plus I still do some relatively new stuff from the library even.
I am finding I am more interested in urban fantasy, fantasy, pnr, dystopian, and mysteries than romance, since they usually have an additional plot. All of those can have romance and I like them to have romance, but I want more plot. On the other hand, a “straight” romance does allow much deeper development of two characters in particular which can be amazing. I just find I have to pick those much more carefully. Yeah I just want ALL the books.
Sounds like a good start to a new series. I like the cover too. Great review!
Happy New Year 🙂
Thank you! The genre feel was different than I expected which kind of threw me but I really liked it. I can’t say why I expected something different.
I love the sound of this book! I’m adding it to my TBR list now. She’s an author that I’ve been wanting to try and this seems like the perfect place to start! Great review!
Thanks – I found it to be a really fun read. It’s the first in the series and just came out today.
This sounds good! I’ve been meaning to read Bouchet’s Kingmaker Chronicles, but haven’t gotten around to them yet. Hopefully sometime this year!
I listened to the first tow of the Kingmaker series on audio and read the last one. I like this new series better so far. But I suppose it depends on if you prefer fantasy romance with mythodology or space opera scifi stuff. I love both.
I am so glad you liked this one, Anne! I do agree that the characters in this story were just fantastic. I really like Tess, Shade, and the crew. Bonk was fun too! I am looking forward to the next book.
Yes, I think her writing has only improved since the Kingmaker Chronicles.
Lots of people are enjoying this one. I’m happy to see you liked it too. Such a lovely cover!
I think it’s a very good book. Characters, skillful world-building, plot, and some humor, and sexy times. What’s not to love?
Great review! I haven’t read anything by this author before, but this sounds like something I would enjoy!
Thank you! I really enjoyed it. It’s different in genre than her first series which was fantasy romance. This is more scifi fantasy and I like it better so far.
