This is a new feature I developed where each month we will look at our favorite – the best – series in a genre or topic.
The topic here, by my definition, is a series with characters who are Artifical Intelligence. These are the ones which came to mind. I enjoyed some more than others. The team had to help me find some of these.
Since I haven’t read everything, it’s a subset of the possibilities. I’m sure I am forgetting some great authors. There are also plenty of authors I have yet to read. Please share your favorites with me in the comments, also.
My favorite Artificial Intelligence series are (in no particular order):
Murderbot Diaries Robot Illuminae Files
by Martha Wells by Isaac Asimov by Amie Kaufman, Jay Kristoff
Wanted and Wired Ali Reynolds Michael Nicholas
by Vivien Jackson by JA Jance by EJ Simon

I loved Illuminae, and I’m behind with Murderbot! I’ve read so many good AI series but it’s too early to remember them at the moment?
Well I’d love to know more series. I think it is a fun subgenre to scifi.
Murderbot Diaries and the Illuminae Files have the best AI characters. I enjoy the little AI character in the Aurora Cycle by Kaufman and Kristoff, too. I haven’t read any other series with AI characters. Now, cyborgs, I’ve read tons. 🙂
My first exposure was the Asimov series, many, many years ago. I like this type of story.
As much as it’s on my TBR, I haven’t read many AI series (or standalones) at all. I’ve wanted to read Illuminae since it first came out … it just looks amazing!
That’s one I also haven’t read but was suggested by my team and I definitely want to read it too.
I like J.A. Jance so I chose her book, not sure I’ve read that particular Ali Reynolds book though, I read a couple, out of order, years ago. How does it fit in with the AI theme?
I liked Donna Andrews” Turing Hopper series which was a mystery series with a team led by a sentient computer. Devon Monk’s House Immortal series, (sci-fi), was good too.
The AI is a key player in the last 4 books, in conjuction with High Noon Enterprises which Ali and her husband own.
I haven’t heard of the Donna Andrews books so I will have to check into them. I don’t know if the House Immortal books are AI or enhanced humans? I have read them all. In fact I am quoted in the blurb for book 2. I love books by Devon Monk. But the Vivien Jackson books might also be considered enhanced human, as well as AI.
Another series I forgot about when doing the post is Cry Pilot by Joel Dane which definitely has some AI.
The books by Andrews were written almost 20 years ago and certainly didn’t do as well as her Meg Langslow mysteries since she’s on #30 now, versus the 4 Turing Hopper books. Gotta say, it took me a bit to warm up to the character of Turing, but I was ultimately sad the series ended.
This is a bit out of my comfort zone! Can’t think of one AI series I’ve ever read.
It’s something I enjoy in scifi. If you were going to ever try one, my strong vote would be Murderbot. They are shortish and funny and the narration is extraordinary.
I have had illuminae on my TBR for some time now. And you’ve just reminded me that I really liked Wanted & Wired (and I have book 2 waiting for me!). The only other AI book that comes to mind is Lif3Lik3 by Jay Kristoff, which I loved and wanted to continue the series ?
All great options. I’m glad I like so many genres / subgenres or this feature would be more difficult for me to do.
For me Murderbot Diaries and the Illuminae Files have the best AI characters.
yes I love them. AI characters are favorite of mine.
The only one of these I’ve read is Illuminae, but it’s definitely a favorite series of mine.
I like this sort of genre but it wasn’t easy to find lots of books in it.
