This is a new feature I developed where each month we will look at our favorite – the best – series in a genre or topic.
The topic here, by my definition, is a series with main characters who are British police detectives. These are the ones which came to mind. I enjoyed some more than others.
Since I haven’t read everything, it’s a subset of the possibilities. I’m sure I am forgetting some great authors. There are also plenty of authors I have yet to read. Please share your favorites with me in the comments, also.
My favorite British Police Detectives series are (in no particular order):
Richard Jury Inspector Lynley Inspector Wexford
by Martha Grimes by Elizabeth George by Ruth Rendell
Charlotte & Thomas Pitt Inspector Morse Duncan Kincaid & Gemma James
by Anne Perry by Colin Dexter by Deborah Crombie

I’ve enjoyed the Elizabeth George, Ruth Rendell, and Anne Perry series. I’ve been meaning to try Martha Grimes.
That one is narrated by Steve West so it’s a real favorite. Of course, the Inspector Lynley books have some narrated by Davina Porter so that’s awesome too.
Hands down it’s the DI Kim Stone series by Angela Marsons. Runner up is the Tony Hill & Carol Jordan series by Val McDermid.
Well I’m buying the Angela Marsons but haven’t read them yet. I also really enjoy the DI Ford series but it only has 3 books so far. Of course I have heard of Val McDermid but not read them. I’ll have to add it to the long list of things I REALLY want to read.
I really liked the Inspector Lynley when they first came out, but lost inter after a while. Carol Graham is another.
I’ll have to check out Carol Graham I don’t know that one.
I don’t know any of these but I voted for Charlotte & Thomas Pitt by Anne Perry because I recognize her name.
It’s a subgenre I have always enjoyed but have really expanded my reading in the last year or so.
Great idea for a series! I don’t read much in this genre but I do enjoy it when I do.
I’ve been reading lots more of this in the past year or so.
Normally I would say this is so outside my wheelhouse. HOWEVER, back in the early 2010s I started the Dylan Scott Mysteries by Shirley Wells. THEY ARE AMAZING!!! In fact, I think I may need to re-read. Loved them!!!
I’ll have to look them up. I thought I knew every mystery series. For about 10 years that is all I read. I’d go thru bookstores alphabetically looking for series I hadn’t read and it was like old home week as I knew them all mostly.
I love the Maeve Kerrigan series by Jane Casey.
I’ll have to look into it. I want to know them all.
