"These are the voyages of the starship...something-something."
Captain Vance Turbo has been struggling for the past few years, his reputation in tatters and most of his allies having turned against him. Offered a chance to go after a sinister crime syndicate at a peace treaty in Notha Space, he jumps at the chance. However, no sooner does he do so that he discovers that a malevolent AI and even more powerful forces are at work. Ones that threaten everyone and everything in the galaxy. Will Vance somehow stumble his way into saving the universe again or will his luck finally run out?
Space Academy is an all-new series from the hilarious duo of C.T. Phipps (Supervillainy Saga, Agent G) and Michael Suttkus (I Was a Teenage Weredeer, Lucifer's Star) that lampoons the space opera as well as military science fiction genres.
Space Academy Washouts starts a few years after book two, Space Academy Rejects. Vance Turbo’s reputation and the reputation of his team are in the toilet. He is sent to go after a criminal group at a peace treaty, but Vance wants the treaty more than he wants the crime syndicate. And there are also wicky powerful, god-like AIs working against him.
This Space Academy series is fast-paced and full of laughs. The character development is top notch. You can’t help but love the characters, flaws and all. The characters are continuing to get more complex with each book. Then there’s the universe (which does have some overlap with a lot of other Phipps/Suttkus stories, but the other series are not required reading to enjoy this series), which continues to grow with each book.
The plot of this series continues to be a lot of fun. If you enjoy science fiction with a lot of action, fun pop culture references and tons of snarkiness, this is a series for you. I do recommend you start with the first book, Space Academy Dropouts. The story arc does cover the entire series. I won’t go anymore into the plot because I could spoil earlier books in the series.
Narration:
Jeffery Kafer is once again the narrator for this story, as he is with most of Phipps/Suttkus stories. He’s one of my favorite narrators. I have enjoyed his work since I listened to my first book with him. I continue to love his ability to bring out the action and humor in the story. He does a great job with both male and female voices. I’ve yet to hear something I didn’t think he performed well.

Thanks for sharing this review, I am always looking for fun books to listen to when I run or do work around the house, this looks like a good series for me!
I hope you’ve had a chance to try this series.
That does sound like it would be an enjoyable read.
This author is one that always brings the fun. He is a great one to pick up if you need to pep up your mood. 🙂
Love Love Love this book!! C. J. Phipps is an amazing author. Vance is a great character. Love Love love!!
I agree. I’ve read, or well listened, to almost all of his work.
Oh wow, this series is already up to #3. I enjoyed the first one and need to get caught up!
Phipps writes really fast. There always seems to be a new book out in one of his series.
Oof I am so far behind in commenting!!!
But this sounds pretty good. I am so picky with my SCIFI. I really should read more.
As you can see, I’m really far behind on commenting too. I keep saying that I’ll be better. I’ll get caught up and say I’m going to stay that way and then it never happens. Hope all is well with you.
