A generation later, Legend of the Great Dragon picks up and delivers the series finale when the prophecy hinted and stated throughout the series finally comes to pass. Mikko, the granddaughter of the pair in book one, Legend of the Oceina Dragon and daughter of the pair in book four, Legend of the Forbidden, feels all the pressure of her status without even knowing she is the dragon of prophecy. And, for the first time, a reclusive Aero dragon (associated with the element of air) gets the limelight as her love interest. I was interested to see how their story works out and wraps up a strongly connected series.
JF Jenkins/Cloud S Riser’s Young Adult Dragon’s Saga fantasy romance series was one I set aside after the first two books and finally picked up over ten years later to finish the series for the Series on Sunday posts (aka challenge). In the meantime, the author changed names, the publisher went out of business, and the books went out of print other than the stray print copy to be found here and there. So, I apologize for dangling a book/series before you that is difficult to find now.
Legend of the Great Dragon, like the heroine, had a lot riding on its bookish shoulders. The whole series has been driving to this point. My own expectations have lowered gradually since those first three books. I’ve seen a trend in how the author built up each individual book only to back off right when the intensity should have been off the charts. The tone of these is part teenage/new adult soap opera and part intrigue and dragon fantasy including attacks and wars. I didn’t sense the inspirational threads at first, but I think this causes the books to not just fade to black on sex times, but also on violence so there is a passive take on the big climax moments that each book, and this one in particular, builds to.
I say that because I felt a let down by Legend of the Great Dragon. I was hoping I was wrong when I spotted it was a couple hundred pages shorter than a well-developed series finale should be, but I just never saw the intensity save in one brief spot. And, the big build up of the dark, mysterious villain and the high stakes of a unique dragon of prophecy who would save the world just- went to the mall, sulked about typical teenage angst stuff, and naively toddled along to her fate. The romance was sweet, but didn’t really have any sparks. Mikko sparked better with her best friend and the villain than Ichy, who was awkward and sweet, but also absent even when present at times.
The best part was seeing Tai, the young spitfire heroine of the first and third book now a venerable wise, widowed grandmother dragon trying to do her best by her granddaughter and that generation because she does know about the Great Dragon prophecy and what the dragon will be up against.
And, so, I’m satisfied to have come back and completed a series where I wanted to know what happened after book two, but in truth, the best parts of the series finished when the first generation of characters gave way to the next and this final one. The premise was strong, but poorly executed in the end.
