Broke, almost homeless, and recently fired. Those are my official reasons for answering a wanted ad for a skeevy-looking bartender gig.
It went downhill the moment they asked me to do a trial shift instead of an interview — to see if I'd mesh with their "special" clientele. I think that part went great. Their customers were complete dickheads, and I was an asshole right back. That's the definition of fitting in, right?
I expected to get thrown out on my ass. Instead, they… offered me the job?
It turns out this place isn't a bar. It's a guild. And the three cocky guys I drenched with a margarita during my trial? Yeah, they were mages. Either I'm exactly the kind of takes-no-shit bartender this guild needs, or there's a good reason no one else wants to work here.
So what's a broke girl to do? Take the job, of course — with a pay raise.
An exciting and fun start to what looks to be an entertaining urban fantasy series.
I was intrigued by Tori right from the start and very curious about where her story was heading. Tori’s first few shifts at the bar served to set up this world of mythics really well. She took to her new job like a fish to water and wasn’t fazed by all the odd customers. I enjoyed her interactions with Aaron, Kai, and Ezra. We learned plenty about all these wonderful characters, but there was obviously a lot more still left undiscovered.
Thrilling fast-paced action and interesting magical abilities were interspersed with lighter moments. Tori was like a cat with nine lives, and somehow always at the right place at the right time. I was so engrossed in the story I barely questioned Tori’s habit of jumping into dangerous situations that she was woefully unprepared for, I just wanted it all to work out.
I can highly recommend this if you like urban fantasy suspense with magic hiding in plain sight. No romance, but something might be brewing? I’m excited to start this series and can’t wait to find out what happens next.

I’m super excited about this series. It started out fun and I really want to read the rest now.
And it’s based in Canada! I’m so glad you are reading with us. Thank you for sharing your review.
This is a fun start to the series. Tori is a cool character. I’m excited to join in this Read-Along. Great Review.
Thanks so much for joining us. I love Tori who is straightforward about her opinions. I appreciate you sharing your reviews.
I agree on your thoughts of Tori. I think that’s what drew me into the series.
You said it, Role’! Getting to know Tori, the guys, and the Guild Codex world made this an exciting start.
yes it’s an awesome bunch of characters. Thanks for linking up your review!
I really enjoyed these series in this world and am excited to see you’re doing a readalong for this, will be fun to read everyone’s reviews. I thought this was a fun introduction to the series and I do like reading about Tori and the side characters and seeing how she deals with being new to the magical world. I hope you continue to enjoy the books!
Thank you Lola. You are welcome to link up any of your reviews you have and join us a bit even if you don’t have time to reread them.
That’s awesome, thanks for letting me know I can link up my reviews. It’s fun to see you all reading these series 🙂
I’m glad to have you joining us in enjoying this series.
I’ve read a scattering of the books in the read along but I’m so excited to read them in order!
I have so many questions about if someone/something is helping Tori be in the right place at the right time or show up at the guild in the first place. Also super interested in the three guys. I have my favorite already and I’m pulling for him but so glad that isn’t the main focus of the book and just a fun side adventure.
yes that is often why I do a Read-along is to reread books closer together, or pick up ones I missed or do them in the correct order. Here the interlinking series I read separately as series somewhat but in this order the events should connect better.
This sounds like a fun series and read-a-long too.
It is really fun. You are welcome to join us Naida.
This series was so much fun. I am excited you are listening to them!
It’s fun to read them. I’m getting a fresh perspective as we discuss them.
I HAVE been itching for a fun UF.
This series is really fun and we’ve only just started. We’d love to have you join us.
I didn’t know anything about this series going into it and I am already hooked after one book. Great review.
If you enjoyed this one, you will probably like the rest. They are fun with a sense of humor. Tori is smart though, not TSTL.
I’m so far behind reading everyone’s reviews! Hope to get caught up this next month. I really liked this one, and I did enjoy the second book we read too, although I’m excited to get started on the 3rd for the read -along and be back with Tori!
So glad you are enjoying them! The Read-along has books from 3 series and my favorite is the one you haven’t read yet – with Robin Page. So there is more fun to come.
