Broke, almost homeless, and recently fired. Those are my official reasons for answering a wanted ad for a skeevy-looking bartender gig.

It went downhill the moment they asked me to do a trial shift instead of an interview — to see if I'd mesh with their "special" clientele. I think that part went great. Their customers were complete dickheads, and I was an asshole right back. That's the definition of fitting in, right?

I expected to get thrown out on my ass. Instead, they… offered me the job?

It turns out this place isn't a bar. It's a guild. And the three cocky guys I drenched with a margarita during my trial? Yeah, they were mages. Either I'm exactly the kind of takes-no-shit bartender this guild needs, or there's a good reason no one else wants to work here.

So what's a broke girl to do? Take the job, of course — with a pay raise.

An exciting and fun start to what looks to be an entertaining urban fantasy series.

I was intrigued by Tori right from the start and very curious about where her story was heading. Tori’s first few shifts at the bar served to set up this world of mythics really well. She took to her new job like a fish to water and wasn’t fazed by all the odd customers. I enjoyed her interactions with Aaron, Kai, and Ezra. We learned plenty about all these wonderful characters, but there was obviously a lot more still left undiscovered.

Thrilling fast-paced action and interesting magical abilities were interspersed with lighter moments. Tori was like a cat with nine lives, and somehow always at the right place at the right time. I was so engrossed in the story I barely questioned Tori’s habit of jumping into dangerous situations that she was woefully unprepared for, I just wanted it all to work out.

I can highly recommend this if you like urban fantasy suspense with magic hiding in plain sight. No romance, but something might be brewing? I’m excited to start this series and can’t wait to find out what happens next.

About Annette Marie

Annette Marie is the author of YA urban fantasy series Steel & Stone, its prequel trilogy Spell Weaver, and romantic fantasy trilogy Red Winter. Her first love is fantasy, but fast-paced urban fantasy, bold heroines, and tantalizing forbidden romances are her guilty pleasures. She proudly admits she has a thing for dragons, and her editor has politely inquired as to whether she intends to include them in every single book.

Annette lives in the frozen winter wasteland of Alberta, Canada (okay, it’s not quite that bad). She shares her life with her remarkably patient, comparatively sensible husband and their furry minion of darkness—sorry, cat—Caesar. When not writing, she can be found elbow-deep in one art project or another while blissfully ignoring all adult responsibilities.

About Rolé at Hooked by the Book

Hello, and welcome to Hooked By That Book! My name is Rolé. I live in Canada with my family. The reading bug bit me when I was about thirteen, and I haven’t looked back since.

I love reading, it’s just about my favourite activity. Books open new worlds and introduce us to wonderful and interesting characters. It provides escape and education and food for thought.

When I’m not reading, I also like scrapbooking, skiing, hiking, and spending time with my family and friends.

I started this blog to share my thoughts on these books with everyone. I hope that it will help you make a decision on whether a book is the right one for you or not.

  1. I really enjoyed these series in this world and am excited to see you’re doing a readalong for this, will be fun to read everyone’s reviews. I thought this was a fun introduction to the series and I do like reading about Tori and the side characters and seeing how she deals with being new to the magical world. I hope you continue to enjoy the books!

  2. I’ve read a scattering of the books in the read along but I’m so excited to read them in order!

I have so many questions about if someone/something is helping Tori be in the right place at the right time or show up at the guild in the first place. Also super interested in the three guys. I have my favorite already and I’m pulling for him but so glad that isn’t the main focus of the book and just a fun side adventure.
