Cyborg soldier Cody Wayne never expected anything more in life than endless missions with his team. Then they were sent to a remote colony world on an undercover mission, which rapidly became something else entirely as they found the planet in the middle of an apocalyptic outbreak. The mysterious epidemic created millions of ‘infected,’ victims who rose from the dead with only one purpose – to create more of themselves and eliminate ordinary humans.

Attempting to reach a safe haven halfway across the globe, Cody and his team have ended up on an isolated ranch, where only the woman who owns the place has survived. She calms every nerve in his re-engineered body and makes his heart long for what he never thought he could have.
Tamsyn Wendover endured and survived the death and destruction of her small town and the loss of everyone else on her ranch. She just wants to live in solitude and mourn. Then the team of Sectors Special Forces soldiers arrives, seeking a place to rest and repair one of their vehicles.

She’s immediately drawn to Cody and his attention pulls her out of her self imposed emotional retreat. Could he be the life partner she’s always dreamed of? But loving him is going to come with hard choices, including leaving her ranch to travel with the team, a doctor and her young brother as they seek answers to the tragedy which has befallen her planet.

Where Tamsyn left off, Journey begins.  A planet – overtaken by a disease that turns humans into a mutant zombie horde and the disorder as civilization has fallen world-wide- has become a dangerous place, but a secret Sectors Special Forces team is on a mission and find love along the way.  Veronica Scott’s sci-fi romances in all their genre nuances are a must-read for me and the Planet of Last Resort sub-series of The Sectors is no exception.

Journey is the fourth entry in the series of three books and in-between novella that must be read in order for the best reading experience.  In fact, Journey’s lead characters were mostly introduced in the first book, Arrival, with the exception of Tamsyn, who was introduced in the title by her name.  Journey gives Cody and Tamsyn the spotlight, but there are also times when Jeff and Melly get some scenes.

Journey opens with Jeff’s special forces team that now includes Dr. Melly Jericho and her little brother taking a breather from their mission travels on Tamsyn’s ranch.  Tamsyn is attracted to Cody, one of the soldiers on the team, but plans to stick around and work her ranch after the team moves on for their clandestine mission.  But, with everything else on the failing world, things change fast when she learns just how vulnerable she is off to herself and, just how important Cody is to her when a side mission to a nearby city puts him and the team in deadly danger.

So, the Journey begins and the way is full of harrowing obstacles from the zombies and rogue humans, alike.

The adrenaline rush was high in this one like every other entry in the series and it was a real nailbiter at times as the unexpected leaped out to grab the characters and reader by the throat- almost literally, a few times.  I loved seeing Tamsyn go from feeling like a liability among all the skilled folk of the military team to finding her niche and the strengths she could bring to the group even as the group faced lots of lethal obstacles.

There was advancement on the series plot of the intrigue Jeff and his team are investigating and plotting out how they can do something about it even as there are also the daily struggles in the situation they are all in.  But there is romance.  Jeff and Melly’s romance solidifies further, but Cody and Tamsyn were a bit of spicy delight, too.  And, I think I spy another pair who might get their chance in the near future.

All in all, Journey was heart-pounding fabulousness.  If a blend of sci-fi and post-apocalyptic zombie adventure makes you sit up and take notice, reach for the Planet of Last Resort series.
