Charlaine Harris has charmed audiences recently with her noirish cozy series starring Lily Bard. Now she returns to her cozy roots with her first Aurora--Roe--Teagarden mystery since Dead Over Heels. Roe and her new and considerably older husband Martin are settled into their new life quite nicely when everything changes with the arrival of Martin's niece Regina. The flighty Regina lands on their doorstep with a baby no one knew she was expecting, then disappears a few hours later leaving both the baby and her husband's brutally murdered corpse in her wake. Roe and Martin must try to answer all the questions in this sticky case: whodunnit, why, and where (as in, Where the heck did this baby come from?
Some time has passed since Aurora has faced a murder, but the calm around Lawrenceville is disrupted by several disturbing incidents- a someone is slipping drugs to unsuspecting innocents, Angel’s overdue to have her baby even while Roe is trying to come to grips that she can’t have a baby, her step-dad has a heart attack, and, oh, Martin’s niece shows up with a baby and shortly after her husband is killed and said niece disappears.
A Fool and His Honey is sixth in a very connected Aurora Teagarden series. It starts with a bang and then has a lull of slow developing while Aurora and Martin work to find his niece and figure out the mystery surrounding her baby. Their investigations take them back to Martin’s home town and a Midwestern winter isn’t the only thing turning Roe cold.
It went along slowly and focused on Roe’s inter-personal connections and introspections. Isolated from most of her support structure, Roe really had to go it alone in this one and with a baby on her hands, no less. The case taking a back seat for much of the book. Then, bang, it exploded into suspenseful action and left me in awe at the way things ended in some ways and unsurprised in others.
A Fool and His Honey was another solid installment and off I go to keep pressing forward through the series.

Sounds like the characters are well drawn so it’s nice to read even when the mystery isn’t front and center much of the book.
Spot on, Rachel! I enjoyed it even with the mystery being second place to the relationship and family stuff.
I’ve read most of her other series and loved them, but somehow this one has eluded me. Thank you for a lovely review and a reminder that I need to get hold of the first book in this series.
It is crazy how much she has written and it has taken me over two years to work through her backlist and I’ve still got more to go. 🙂 This has been a really good series and I hope to watch the Hallmark Mystery TV adaptions soon, too.
