Marie Fortune, 39, a successful dog groomer in Boston, has had enough of catering to the wealthy and their pampered dogs. Realizing it is time to make a change, she quits and heads to a small coastal town in Maine where she remembers fond summers as a kid. Marie expects to go for a brief getaway—and is shocked to learn that her great-aunt left her an inheritance: a dilapidated, historic house high up on a hill overlooking the harbor.
Marie feels an instant connection. Although the locals tell her it would be folly, Marie decides to renovate and give it a second life as a B&B.
But there is one thing she couldn’t have planned for: the house is haunted. Two things, actually: her great-aunt also left her a dog—and he is far from a typical dog.
Murder and Breakfast was an easy enough read with a middle age woman inheriting her cool aunt’s house and turning it into a haunted bed & breakfast. There were many aspects which struck me as ridiculous from the way she just went to the town for the funeral, then ended up moving in and being able to open as a business in a short time. I mean very little remodeling or permits or anything? And the amazing cook working for free?
On the other hand, the whole Internet blowup of it being haunted and the aftermath with the murder seemed plausible. I enjoyed the ghosts. Marie did a decent job of solving the mystery. Of course, I loved the dog.

Happily Ever After" wasn't supposed to come with a do-over option. But when my husband of twenty years packs up and heads for greener pastures and my son leaves for college, that's exactly what my life becomes. Do-over.
This time, though, I plan to do things differently. Age is just a number, after all, and at forty I'm ready to carve my own path.
Eager for a fresh start, I make a somewhat unorthodox decision and move to a tiny town in the Sierra foothills. I'll be taking care of a centuries old house that called to me when I was a kid. It's just temporary, I tell myself. It'll just be for a while. That is, until I learn what the house really is, something I never could've imagined.
There seems to be a thing with inheriting a cool aunt’s house, or in this case a bff’s aunt. Jacinta (Jess) is offered a caretaker position in a house she loved visiting as a child. It’s a perfect chance to start over after divorce, son in college and not wanting to live with her parents again. She still loves the house.
The town, and the house, come with some strange quirks. Jess learns there is more in the world than she ever knew like shifters and vampires and more. The house is choosing her which will bring magic and others who want the magic.
I liked Jess and her sassy approach to life. Instead of wallowing in her situation, she jumped into the new situation. She was resilient and held to her own beliefs amid the changes. This is an interesting supernatural world and I think I’d like to know more about how Jess builds her new life.
These are only Kindle freebies I get, or ones through author newsletters which anyone can sign up and get for free. I don’t include things like Kindle Unlimited or Prime Free Reading (I do have it). Both Tantor and Audible have occasional free audios (to anyone) and I do include those. Since I one-click on 1-2 freebies a day or probably at least 5 a week, I came up with this feature to make sure I start reading them.
FYI – My Thrifty Thursday post with my reviews and the linkups and giveaway will normally post on the 3rd Thursday of the month. I’ve read quite a few haunted house stories where the main character inherits the house from a relative, it’s definitely a thing!
IKR? It’s often combined with witches or magic or ghosts, too.
Haven’t read any of these, but you gotta love those free books that unexpectedly fall into your lap. I love your Halloween banner.
Thank you! I had to create this challenge to make sure I read at least some of them.
Great that you found one that you want to continue in the series, Anne💜 Both actually sound interesting.
Sadly they all sound interesting and I can’t always read everything right away when I want.
That’s funny that both your picks ended up involving a gal inheriting a house. I think I have them both on my Kindle.
It happens a lot Sophia. That’s what happens in the Darynda Jones one.
Both of these sound pretty good to me. Things always seem to be easier in books than real life so I am usually pretty forgiving when it happens.
yes I know it’s fiction but sometimes I just can’t suspend my disbelief.
I enjoyed Magical Midlife Madness. Great finds 🙂
Thank yo Kimberly. I love some of the freebies I get are really good.
Perfect for the season
yes I try to fit the season sometimes.
I need to read something by K.F. Breene! Thanks for sharing these.
I find it fun to put together themes.
