Meet DI Hillary Greene, a police woman fighting to save her career
Not only has she lost her husband, but his actions have put her under investigation for corruption.
Then a bashed and broken body is found floating in the Oxford Canal. It looks like the victim fell off a boat, but Hillary is not so sure. Her investigation exposes a dark background to the death.
Can Hillary clear her name and get to the bottom of a fiendish conspiracy on the water?
I keep trying new books with female law enforcement characters, many in England. I can’t tell yet after just one book whether this could become a favorite series. The DI Hillary Greene series certainly has plenty of books.
Murder on the Oxford Canal introduces us to the main character, her team and the environs where she lives and works. Hillary is a smart and capable officer being used by others to solve cases and do scut work, while being investigated for her corrupt dead husband’s crimes. They were midst divorce and all was frozen so her living situation is precarious.
Hillary starts on a murder case which is difficult to prove and tangled up with drug runners. Was the victim killed for personal reasons or for his criminal activities? It turns out he is a rapist, so someone could be mad there. He might have been skimming the drug money, another likely reason for him to be killed.
We get introduced to her team and there are many crushes and affairs and jealousies. Those seemed a bit cliche at times. Hillary does brilliantly solve her case but the end has her solving another puzzle which leaves a bit of a cliffhanger. I probably will read more to see if I want to continue through but I don’t know when I will make time for it.
Narration:
Gemma Dawson is a narrator I have heard a few times. I thought her voices and accents were comfortable and brought forth appropriate emotions. Her pacing was brisk enough I thought about slowing down from my usual 1.5x speed.
