It's been twenty years since Cormac Reilly discovered the body of Hilaria Blake in her crumbling Georgian home. But he's never forgotten the two children she left behind...
When Aisling Conroy's boyfriend Jack is found in the freezing black waters of the river Corrib, the police tell her it was suicide. A surgical resident, she throws herself into study and work, trying to forget - until Jack's sister Maude shows up. Maude suspects foul play, and she is determined to prove it.
DI Cormac Reilly is the detective assigned with the re-investigation of an 'accidental' overdose twenty years ago - of Jack and Maude's drug- and alcohol-addled mother. Cormac is under increasing pressure to charge Maude for murder when his colleague Danny uncovers a piece of evidence that will change everything...
This unsettling crime debut draws us deep into the dark heart of Ireland and asks who will protect you when the authorities can't - or won't.
This was an Audible freebie; I have no idea why but it was splendid. The Ruin is the first in the Cormac Reilly series. Cormac is a homicide detective in Ireland and has been for 20 years. He has had some success but has just transferred from to a new location because of his girlfriend, Emma’s job. There are a few he knows but it is a tough start.
He is given only old, cold cases but one of them is tied to a case from his first week in the force. Then it ties in to a more recent crime. This is a situation where no one can decide who to trust and the answer is mostly no one. I had to listen to know what really happened and I was so afraid for people, especially children.
I was thrilled to listen and the next one is available, The Scholar, and I hope to hear it soon. The Ruin was a suspenseful treat.
Narration:
I had not heard this narrator before and haven’t the experience to know if the Irish lilt is authentic but it was enjoyable. The main character is male but many of the story’s important characters were female. I was comfortable with all the voices at my usual 1.5x speed.

These are only Kindle freebies I get, or ones through author newsletters which anyone can sign up and get for free. I don’t include things like Kindle Unlimited or Prime Free Reading (I do have it). Both Tantor and Audible have occasional free audios (to anyone) and I do include those. Since I one-click on 1-2 freebies a day or probably at least 5 a week, I came up with this feature to make sure I start reading them.
So I have thought about doing a Thrifty Thursday Challenge someday. For now, what I think would be fun is if you have read and reviewed a freebie, link up to your review (Goodreads, blog, facebook or wherever) below.

Ooh! A new mystery thriller!! I’ve not heard of this one, Anne and I love your review? I have to have it!!! (Found the audiobook at my library!!!)
Yes, it’s really great. I love the setting and accents. I’m always up for a mystery / thriller / police procedural. I have the next one on reserve at the library for myself too.
i really like this post and i do love my mysteries. i have a ton of freebies and i have flagged this email so i’ll remember that i want to participate in the future.
I hope you will. This was my effort to get myself doing a freebie review post at least once a month, sometimes more. It has worked well for me, but I’d love to have others join in on the fun.
Oh this one is completely new to me but it looks good!
I really enjoyed it. I am on a mystery / thriller binge right now.
Yay! I got this one as a freebie a few years back around St Patrick’s Day. It looks good, but I keep putting it off. You’ve reminded me to get it listened to with the way you enjoyed it and the narration.
I hope you love it as much as I did. I can’t wait to get the next in the series from the library.
