Somehow, I thought with the title, The Crime Beat, I would be getting a true crime story. The genre is mystery / thriller and it is fiction. The main characters are an unlikely duo. Jane Cole is a crime beat reporter who is a widow. Rob Warren is a former marine, cop and now tracking a serial killer conspiracy.
Jane and Rob meet near the first crime in the series, set in New York. Jane had written a story about Rob using too much force and got him in trouble. But Rob ends up having some key information which puts them on the track of the killers. Between them, they utilize their specialized contacts to find the first killer. But this is not the only killer, based on Rob’s information.

Cole is a star in the media because of her accurate predictions. Barker offers her better pay and commitments to take all her stories. She seems kind of finished with the stories, even offering info to a television reporter. But she flies to Tokyo to follow the next lead.

In the final episode of The Crime Beat, everything comes together in Los Angeles. On New Year’s Eve, a brutal terrorist attack threatens the city. But is it connected to the nine murders? And will Cole and Warren reach the mastermind of the killings before the plan reaches completion?
Everyone heads to Los Angeles for the final location. Gaby, and the two reporters, are with Cole and Warren. They all try to figure out the location which would be where the last assassination will be. They also try to figure out about the 9 guns purchased in the beginning. Since they thought “hundreds” would die, how would that happen with a gun?
Through research and smart deductions, our team figures out what is happening and heads out to try to save lives. It’s tenuous chance they will be believed by all the law enforcement and the rich people partying for the New Year. They put themselves on the edge of danger to save party goers and ensnare the head planner of the crimes. Finally, we see more of their efforts have an impact.
Narration:
I’ve enjoyed this narrator previously on a police procedural series and this is a similar genre. Her male and female voices were comfortably appropriate. I enjoyed listening at my usual 1.5x speed.

Sounds like a engaging mystery/crime procedural series. I’ll look it up.
It’s pretty good but it’s a serial with 9 parts. I don’t like that as much as one well-plotted book. It was an easy, enjoyable listen though.
These look like good quickies. Perfect for when I finish an audio near bedtime, but want to listen to more.
Yes they are quick especially if you listen at a rate more than 1x as I do. I would buy the box set if you are using credits instead of each of the 9 individual. I think they might have one that includes all 9 but for sure they have them in sets of 3 and you need all 9 to finish the story.
