The past and the present collide in the final installment of USA Today bestselling author Debra Webb’s Devlin & Falco series, threatening everything these two detectives care about.
Birmingham detectives Kerri Devlin and Luke Falco arrive at the scene of a double homicide to discover that nothing makes sense. A woman and her child are dead, and though the husband says he killed them, the evidence says otherwise. Why would a man confess to unspeakable murders he didn’t commit?
What starts as an open-and-shut case explodes into a web of new leads. Devlin and Falco get to work tracking down every single one—including a disturbing connection between the murders and Falco’s dark past.
Falco knows the incident from eight years ago will jeopardize the partnership he’s built with Devlin, both on and off the job. If he could go back, he would—but what happened happened, and there’s a murderer on the loose. Devlin and Falco must slog through the pain to get to the truth; and so far the only truth they know is that everyone is lying.
I am still loving the Devlin & Falco series. We get the point of view from multiple characters this time. The main characters are still Kerri Devlin and Luke Falco and we get both of their viewpoints. We also get a bit from Jana Scott, the mother of the homicide victim. Devlin and Faldo work very well together. They are hard-working and professional.
Devlin & Falco are also expanding their personal relationship, trying out living together over the Thanksgiving holiday when Kerri’s daughter is out of town with her father. I really enjoy how supportive and trusting they are with each other. As cops, they each have bad things in their past and aren’t happy with everything they have done or seen. I love how there was no hesitation with either of them to believe the best of the other and have their back. They are truly partners.
Can’t Go Back has the investigation of a homicide of a woman and child. The husband worked in undercover narcotics, with the same group Falco did about 10 years ago. Many of the old undercover team, who are secretive and insular, need to be questioned about the husband. It brings up the worst time in Falco’s career. It’s a dangerous and difficult case with layers of other things obstructing the truth.
Sadie Cross shows up again as a source and support for them on this case. They are building their friends and allies. I really love this series, but I would recommend reading it in order. One of the descriptions on Goodreads shows this as the final installment, but I would definitely read more. The series is available in Kindle Unlimited, including the audio version.
Narration:
I listened to the previous book, so I was already comfortable with Donna Postel and felt she was Kerri Devlin. I’ve enjoyed Neil Hellegers before on other audiobooks, but it is his first time on this series. His time was somewhat limited but I was satisfied with his performance. I listened at my normal 1.5x speed.

I really wish I’d taken up the offer on this series when it was first offered. Wonderful review, Anne, and I’m glad you’re enjoying the stories💜
It is a series I really am enjoying. You could take one of those Kindle Unlimited deals for a free month or a few for 99¢ since this one is in KU with audio. I wish I could take and even read all the one I want to read. There are plenty at the library and in my Audible library I still am trying to fit in reading.
This isn’t my usual read, but it sounds like something I might enjoy! 🙂

I really enjoyed it and if you have KU or a trial you can read and/or listen to it. It is totally my jam though. The only thing which could make it better was if it were set in England. lol
I’ve seen your reviews for this series in the past and I like the sound of it. I think it’s one I might enjoy. I like that it’s a “read and listen for free” with KU (just checked). I need to add the first one. Fab review, Anne!
Thanks Rachel. I hope you enjoy it because I like it a lot.
I”m so glad you enjoyed this book and are enjoying this series so much!
This is one of my favorite genres – the police procedural.
I don’t remember if I’ve tried one of her books but the name does ring a bell so I’ll take a look
She has a few series and I’ve been enjoying them. She does have this on Kindle Unlimited.
I don’t think that I have ever read anything written by this author. This sounds like it would be something that I would enjoy. Great review!
Thanks. I really enjoy this series. It might just be the trilogy but I would gladly read more.
