Alice Vega has made a career of finding the missing and vulnerable against a ticking clock, but she's never had a case like Zeb Williams, missing for over thirty years. It was 1984, and the big Cal-Stanford football game was tied with seconds left on the clock. Zeb Williams grabbed the ball and ran the wrong way, through the marching band, off the field and out of the stadium. He disappeared into legend, replete with Elvis-like sightings and a cult following.

Zeb's cold trail leads Vega to southern Oregon, where she discovers an anxious community living under siege by a local hate group called the Liberty Boys. As Vega starts digging into the past, the mystery around Zeb's disappearance grows deeper, and the reach of the Liberty Boys grows more disturbing. Everyone has something to hide, and no one can cut to the truth like Alice Vega. But this time, her partner Max Caplan has his own problems at home, and the trouble Vega finds might be too much for her to handle.

I’ve been reading the Alice Vega series from the beginning.Ā  I love the quirky Alice, who is resourceful and smart.Ā  Her work puts her up against some tough people and tends to be dangerous. You wouldn’t think this would be true with many of her cases being for missing persons.Ā  However, to solve the disappearances or any other type of case she has to get into people’s personal lives and often their secrets inform her as to what happened.

In this outing, she is being well paid to find a man who left a football game 30 years ago running out of the stadium.Ā  Her leads take her to a small town with some white supremacists throwing their weight around and not appreciating questions.Ā  It gets dicey too quickly.

Personally, she and Cap are not working together. Last time was also dangerous and he got hurt but also, his daughter Nell was threatened. Cap took a safe job, staying around home.Ā  But they miss each other, and Cap misses working with Vega and the adrenaline rush of taking down the bad guys. He was a cop in his previous life. Nell encourages him to work with Vega again.

We also see Alice’s parents, who are Bible beaters, and don’t understand her work.Ā  She struggles to spend time with them at all, but they all do care about each other.

Alice, in her own way, succeeds in taking down the Nazis, finding the long lost man, and getting the man.Ā  I love going along with her, although it is more dangerous than I would want to live. But you will have to readĀ  Hideout to learn how everything happens.

Narration:

I have listened to Tavia Gilbert before.Ā  She is the narrator for this whole series and I am very comfortable with her voice for Alice, and everyone else, but she is totally Alice and Cap for me.Ā  I really enjoy this series on audio.Ā  I listened at my usual 1.5x speed.
