This is a new feature I developed where each month we will look at our favorite – the best – series in a genre or topic.
The topic here, by my definition, is a series with main characters who are Dragons. These are the ones which came to mind. I enjoyed some more than others. The team had to help me find some of these.
Since I haven’t read everything, it’s a subset of the possibilities. I’m sure I am forgetting some great authors. There are also plenty of authors I have yet to read. Please share your favorites with me in the comments, also.
My favorite Dragon series are (in no particular order):
Heartstrikers Aisling Grey Temeraire
by Rachel Aaron by Katie MacAlister by Naomi Novik
Realm of the Elderlings Royal Houses The Invisible Library
by Robin Hobb by KA Linde by Genevieve Cogman

My favorite dragon series is the Dragon Kin series by G.A. Aiken (Shelly Laurenston). It is SO good,
That one is on my list to read!
I don’t think I’ve ever read a book with a dragon as the main character. However, the Aisling Grey series looks like a lot of fun.
It is fun. I would say it has more romance maybe than some of the others.
Dragon Kin by G.A. Aiken is great as is Coreene Callahan’s Dragonfury, Jessie Donovan’s – Stonefire, Lochguard, Tahoe and other spinoff series, and Abigail Owen’s Fire’s Edge & Inferno Rising! But I have two absolute favorites that are tied for #1 – Deborah Cooke’s Dragonfire and Donna Grant’s Dark Kings & the Dragon Kings spinoff!
Excellent. Now I’ve got more titles to read. Thank you! I had heard of some of these, but had not read them yet.
The only series I’ve read from your list is the one by Katie MacAlister and I loved those. Other dragons I love are the Dark Kings series by Donna Grant. Can’t think of any others now.
It’s always a struggle to remember more even if I have read them. I’ve got lots more series to read which I haven’t yet too.
Oh, that’s for sure. I’m never going to run out of books I still want to read.
Out of your list, I’ve only read the MacAlister and Cogman’s series. One of my favorites series started as more of a wolf shifter series then introduced dragon characters a few books later in Eileen Wilks’ Lupi series.
I sometimes have others like that. I try to keep to the theme though. There are more I want to read in this subgenre.
My favorite dragon series is Dragon Kin by G.A. Aiken. I also enjoyed Vale of Stars by Juliette Cross, Dragon Falls by Katie MacAlister, Nightwing by Juliette Cross, & Dragons of Preor by Erin Tate & Celia Kyle.
Yes I want to read more, including ones you mentioned.
My favorite is G.A. Aiken’s Dragon Kin series.
That’s a popular one I also want to read.
My fave is The Priory of the Orange Tree – it’s just such an immersive world with wonderful characters. 🙂
That’s one series I really want to read! Thanks for sharing.
whenever i get asked a question like that, well most of the time, i say the one i am reading or going to read next
When I do these genre type posts it is some work to remember all the books in a specific topic I have read and then pick 6 as favorites.
Dragon Bound, the first book in the Elder Races series, will always rank as my most favorite book about dragons, even though it’s not series devoted totally to dragons. I LOVED that story!
Yes I loved that and there are several dragon characters and stories in the series. I did consider it but decided it wasn’t specific enough like a few others I considered.
I haven’t read too many dragon books. I do love the Invisible Library series. I also recently listened to the first book in the Inferno Rising series by Abigail Owen and hope to read more of the series soon.
I didn’t think I had read too many but when I spent some time looking into it there are lots. I haven’t read all of them. I have enough different ones for a second post after I read more I haven’t read from my list.
I added Talon by Julie Kagawa, which is YA, but one of the only books where a main character was a dragon that I’ve read. Does Eragon count? Or, not a series, but Damsel by Elana K. Arnold has a surprise dragon character in it!
I have enough different dragon books for another post after I read more of them. I know about the Julie Kagawa books but I don’t know Eragon. I am focusing on series for this meme rather than single books though.
